Reaching as far as the Arctic Circle, Se- attle Children's serves pediatric patients across Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho — the largest region of any pediatric hospital in the U.S. U.S. News & World Report ranked Seattle Children's among the top 10 children's hospitals in the nation overall and ranked it nationally in 10 specialties in its 2016-17 rankings. Construction is underway at Seattle Children's to expand its Research Institute with a project called "Building Cure," which will be dedicated to research on pediatric cancer, diabetes and sickle cell anemia. Sentara Norfolk (Va.) General Hospital. Sentara Norfolk General Hos- pital is the flagship of the 12-hospital Norfolk-based Sentara Healthcare system, which dates back to 1888 when it started as the 25-bed Retreat for the Sick in Norfolk. Today, Norfolk General is 525-bed medical cen- ter that serves as the primary teaching institution for Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk. Norfolk General is considered a destination medical center in the mid-Atlantic. It houses a Level I trauma center, burn unit and nationally ranked heart and diabetes/endocrinology pro- grams by U.S. News & World Report for 2016-17. e hospital is cur- rently under construction as part of an expansion and modernization project slated for completion in 2020. Spectrum Health Medical Center-Butterworth Hospital (Grand Rap- ids, Mich.). Butterworth Hospital is the flagship hospital for the Spec- trum Health Medical Center. It has served Grand Rapids since 1873, growing into a major tertiary and quaternary referral center, equipped with a certified primary stroke center, regional burn center and Level I trauma center. In 2016 the hospital was designated as a Spring Leapfrog Grade A Hospital and a Truven Health Analytics Top 100 Hospital. U.S. News & World Report ranked the hospital No. 4 in Michigan for 2016-17. St. Cloud (Minn.) Hospital. Founded as a small community hospital by the Sisters of the Order of St. Benedict in 1886, St. Cloud Hospital is a Catholic-affiliated comprehensive regional medical center with 489 li- censed beds, 440 physicians and nearly 5,000 employees. Truven Health Analytics named the hospital to its 100 Top Hospitals 2016 list and U.S. News & World Report ranked it among the top three in the state for 2016- 17. In partnership with the University of Minnesota, St. Cloud Hospital is also home to a three-year family medicine residency program. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (Memphis, Tenn.). St. Jude Chil- dren's Research Hospital was founded by entertainer Danny omas un- der the belief that "no child should die in the dawn of life." e hospital is unique in that public contributions cover 75 percent of its operating costs, which total $2.4 million per day. No family pays for their child to receive treatment at St. Jude, which provides care for serious pediatric illnesses. Since it was founded in 1962, the hospital has improved patient survival rates from 4 percent to 94 percent. St. Luke's Boise (Idaho) Medical Center. St. Luke's Boise Medical Cen- ter is the flagship hospital of St. Luke's Health System, which is the larg- est healthcare provider in the state. e teaching hospital is home to the system's children's hospital — the only pediatric hospital in Idaho — as well as its heart hospital, tumor institute and center for minimally inva- sive surgery. e medical center is ranked No. 1 in the state by U.S. News & World Report for 2016-17 and earned a five-star quality rating from CMS in December 2016. Stanford Health Care-Stanford (Calif.) Hospital. Stanford Hospital, part of the Stanford Health Care system, has 613 licensed beds and a medical staff of more than 2,500. e hospital ranks No. 3 in California and among the top 20 hospitals in the country by U.S. News & World Report for 2016-17. In 2018, the system is slated to open a new Stanford Hospital, which will be up-to-date on seismic standards and will feature a new Level I trauma center and emergency department twice its pre- vious size, 368 additional beds, 20 operating rooms and five gardens, walking trails and a meditation room. Tampa (Fla.) General Hospital. Tampa General Hospital, a private, nonprofit academic medical center, is one of Florida's largest hospi- tals with 1,011 licensed beds and about 7,300 employees. The hos- pital is located on the Davis Islands and is accessible by two bridges and four medical helicopters for critically ill patients. The facility is home to a Level I trauma center, a burn center, comprehensive stroke center, 32-bed neuroscience intensive care unit and an organ trans- plant center that has completed more than 6,000 adult solid organ transplants. U.S. News & World Report ranks Tampa General No. 3 in the state for 2016-17. Texas Children's Hospital (Houston). Texas Children's Hospital ranks among the top 10 pediatric hospitals in the nation by U.S. News & World Report for 2016-17. e hospital excels particularly in pulmon- ology and cancer care — it earned No. 1 and No. 2 rankings from U.S. News for those specialties respectively among all pediatric hospitals in the country. is year, Texas Children's launched the Global HOPE initiative in partnership with affiliate Baylor College of Medicine in Houston to establish a pediatric hematology-oncology care network in sub-Saharan Africa. e Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (Columbus). e Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is home to the 900-bed University Hospital, a cancer hospital and research institute, lung re- search institute, heart hospital, rehabilitation hospital and outpatient care facilities throughout the state. OSU Wexner Medical Center treats more than 1.5 million patients and provides more than $170 million of charity care and community support each year. e hospital is ranked No. 2 in the state by U.S. News & World Report for 2016-17 and received an A grade for safety from Leapfrog in fall 2016. omas Jefferson University Hospitals (Philadelphia). omas Jef- ferson University Hospitals has 937 licensed beds across five locations and a medical staff of more than 1,500. TJUH is dedicated to improv- ing health within the communities it serves and since 1998 has operat- ed a Center for Urban Health, which leverages hospital and university resources in combination with community organizations to improve health in targeted areas. e hospital was ranked No. 3 in the state by U.S. News & World Report for 2016-17 and is Magnet-certified for nursing excellence. UAB Hospital (Birmingham, Ala.). e 1,157-bed UAB Hospital is a major hub for clinical research and cutting-edge medical care. e aca- demic medical center is home to the only comprehensive cancer center in a five-state region. UAB Hospital was ranked No. 1 in Alabama by U.S. News & World Report for 2016-17, received Magnet certification for top- notch nursing care and was designated a Most Wired hospital by H&HN in 2016 for integrating advanced technology into care delivery. UC San Diego Medical Center. is 390-bed academic medical center is one of two main campuses for UC San Diego Health and the main clinical teaching hub for UC San Diego School of Medicine. e Hill- crest campus is home to a comprehensive stroke center, Level I trauma center, regional burn center, inpatient psychiatry unit and a clinic dedi- cated to HIV/AIDS treatment. e medical center boasts eight national- ly ranked specialties and a top 10 ranking in California from U.S. News & World Report for 2016-17. Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center (Los Angeles). Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center consistently ranks among the top hospitals in the country. For 2016-17, U.S. News & World Report ranked it No. 1 in California and No. 5 in the nation, and it has defended its spot among America's top six hospitals for 27 years running. Its four-acre, 530-bed campus includes a neuropsychiatric hospital and a children's hospital.
