Medtronic Plans to Sell Medical
Supplies Unit, Bloomberg
Reports: 6 Key Insights

D
ublin, Ireland-based Medtronic is planning to
sell a portion or all of its medical supplies busi-
ness, unnamed sources revealed to Bloomberg.
Here are six key insights:
1. Medtronic is working with advisers to identify po-
tential buyers.
2. The division may be worth approximately $5 billion,
the sources told Bloomberg.
3. The company's medical supplies business encom-
passes a variety of equipment, such as needles and
monitoring technology.
4. Much of Medtronic's medical supplies line stems
from its acquisition of Dublin-based Covidien in 2014.
5. Bloomberg reported Medtronic may seek one or
several divestures of its medical supplies business.
6. A Medtronic spokesman did not disclose any infor-
mation to Bloomberg. n
FDA Reclassifies Pedicle
Screws & Clarifies Dynamic
Stabilization Systems

The FDA reclassified pedicle screw systems from a
class III device to a class II device.
The device is renamed "thoracolumbosacral pedi-
cle screw systems" and with the class change went
from being regulated under the product code KNB
to "special controls." The FDA also reclassified dy-
namic stabilization systems, a pedicle screw systems
subtype, as class II with the new name of "semi-rigid
systems."
The FDA renamed and clarified the devices to delin-
eate the differences between rigid pedicle screw sys-
tems and semi-rigid systems.
The reclassification was effective on Dec. 30, 2016, af-
ter a two-year review process. n
Zimmer Biomet Names
New President, Americas:
Robert Delp

Robert D. Delp will assume a new leadership role with Zimmer Biomet
later this month.
Here are five key notes:
1. Mr. Delp will assume the role of president, Americas, previously held
by Stuart G. Kleopfer, who decided to retire. Mr. Kleopfer was a leader
with Biomet before the merger with Zimmer.
2. e leadership transition took place Jan. 23, 2017. Mr. Kleopfer will
continue with the company for a time and work closely with Mr. Delp as
he fully assumes his new responsibilities.
3. Mr. Delp has previous experience as Zimmer Biomet's vice president of
U.S. sales where he led the sales for the knee, hip, bone cement, biologics,
extremities, sports medicine, foot and ankle, surgical and trauma categories.
4. Mr. Delp has more than 20 years of experience in sales leadership.
5. Zimmer Biomet currently has operations in 25 countries and sells
products in 100-plus countries. n
