Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, part of Penn Medicine, includes the Pavilion for Advanced Care, a 178,000-square-foot acute care building and Penn Medicine's Level I trauma center. e hospital has an extensive record of medical ac- complishments, such as creating one of the first coronary care units in the nation. More recently, it has become a regional leader for minimally invasive and robotic-assisted surgery. e hospital achieved Magnet status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. It was also named as one of Healthgrades' 100 Best Hospitals in 2015 and 2016. In its 2015-16 rankings, U.S. News & World Report named Penn Presbyterian Medical Center the No. 1 hospital in Pennsylvania. It is nation- ally ranked in 13 adult specialties — includ- ing ear, nose and throat; cardiology and heart surgery; and pulmonology — and named high performing for three adult procedures and conditions by U.S. News. Houston Methodist Hospital. Houston Meth- odist Hospital, the flagship hospital of the Houston Methodist system, has served patients from the Houston community and around the world for more than 90 years. What began as a 30-bed hospital has evolved into one of the nation's largest private nonprofit hospitals, an academic teaching hospital and a center for leading medical research. e hospital employs more than 6,100 peo- ple, houses 824 operating beds and has near- ly 400,000 emergency room, outpatient visits and admissions each year. Currently, Houston Methodist Hospital sponsors 239 medical resi- dents in 39 programs. It has numerous academ- ic affiliates, including Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, e University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and the University of Texas Medical Branch in Gal- veston, among others. Houston Methodist Hospital was ranked as the No. 1 hospital in Texas by U.S. News & World Report in its 2015-16 rankings. It is national- ly ranked in 11 adult specialties and named as high performing for three adult procedures and conditions, according to U.S. News. e hospital is Magnet-designated, and in 2016, it was named among Truven Health Analytics' 100 Top Hospitals. In 2015 and 2016, Houston Methodist Hospital was ranked among the 50 Best Hospitals by Healthgrades. Indiana University Health University Hospi- tal (Indianapolis). Indiana University Health University Hospital celebrated its first century of service in 2014. What began as the 115-bed Long Hospital in the early 1900s has evolved into a 400-bed academic medical center with more than 3,000 employees and 500 faculty and physicians on a medical staff representing more than a dozen specialties. IU Health University Hospital, which houses the IU Health Melvin and Bren Simon Can- cer Center, is the only National Cancer Insti- tute-designated comprehensive cancer center in the state. e hospital also contains the larg- est transplant program by volume in Indiana. IU Health University Hospital is a designated Magnet hospital by the American Nurses Cre- dentialing Center. U.S. News & World Report ranked the hospital No. 1 in Indiana in its 2015- 16 rankings. Additionally, IU Health Universi- ty Hospital is nationally ranked in 10 adult and 10 pediatric specialties by U.S. News. In 2015 and 2016, the hospital was listed among the 50 Best Hospitals by Healthgrades. Inova Fairfax Hospital (Falls Church, Va.). Inova Fairfax Hospital, the flagship hospital of the nonprofit Inova Health System, welcomed its first patients in February 1961. e 833- bed hospital is home to Northern Virginia's only Level I trauma center. e Inova Fairfax Medical Campus also contains Inova Women's Hospital, which includes a level IV neonatal intensive care unit, and Inova Children's Hos- pital, a 226-bed full-service children's hospital in a new facility that opened in 2016. Inova Fairfax Hospital is a teaching facility, partnering with the medical schools of George- town University and George Washington Uni- versity in Washington, D.C., the VCU School of Medicine in Richmond, as well as several nursing and pharmacy schools. Inova Fairfax Hospital was ranked the No. 1 hospital in the Washington, D.C., metro area for the fourth consecutive year by U.S. News & World Report in its 2015-16 rankings. It was ranked nationally for gynecology, as well as for pediatric cardiology and heart surgery and neonatology. Additionally, the Leapfrog Group gave the hospital an "A" grade for patient safety in its fall 2015 scores. Intermountain Medical Center (Murray, Utah). As the flagship hospital of Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Healthcare, Inter- mountain Medical Center consists of five inter- connected centers of excellence encompassing 1.7 million square feet. e architectural con- ception and construction of this high-tech fa- cility took over 10 years and cost $572 million. e hospital has 454 beds, making it the largest hospital in Utah. In its 2015-16 rankings, U.S. News & World Report ranked Intermountain Medical Center as the No. 1 hospital in both the Salt Lake City metropolitan area and Utah. e hospital is involved with over 400 clinical research proj- ects focused on advancing medical science to improve healthcare quality and efficiency. e facility also houses six intensive care units and a world-renowned mechanical/artificial heart transplant program. Other cutting-edge tech- nology housed at Intermountain include the da Vinci Robot, a 3-D imaging system for mammography screening and hybrid oper- ating rooms that allow heart catheterization procedures and cardiovascular surgery to take place simultaneously for patients with complex heart conditions. Both the physical space and the processes im- plemented by hospital staff are geared toward enhancing privacy and family involvement. Creating a healing environment is one of Intermountain Medical Center's chief objec- tives. e facility's structure includes natural elements like gardens, fountains, mountain views, walking paths and organic building materials. e facility also offers patients and their families private alcoves, meditation rooms and a chapel. John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek (Calif.). John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek was founded in the late 1950s by 50 physicians. Aer several years of fundraising, the physicians and community members pur- chased a site upon which to build the hospi- tal. e hospital officially opened its doors on June 16, 1965. Just over 150 full- and part-time employees staffed the 150-bed hospital, which provided care to roughly 75 patients each day. Today, John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek contains 572 licensed hospital beds. It is the only designated trauma center for Contra Costa County and portions of Solano County. e hos- pital is led by Jane A. Willemsen, who serves as president and chief administrative officer. John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek is Magnet-designated by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. In 2015 and 2016, the hospital was ranked among the nation's 50 Best Hospitals by Healthgrades. Additionally, U.S. News & World Report ranked John Muir Med- ical Center, Walnut Creek the No. 2 hospital in the San Francisco metro area in its 2015-16 rankings. It is nationally ranked in three adult specialties: gastroenterology and GI surgery, gynecology and orthopedics. Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore). e Johns Hopkins Hospital opened on May 7, 1889. e hospital and the university were in- corporated and endowed by Johns Hopkins, a wealthy Quaker businessman known as Balti- more's greatest philanthropist. e organiza- tion is one of the first healthcare systems to
