96 T he ASC industry, like all of healthcare, has undergone waves of consolidation, but there remain a number of companies that offer man- agement and development services. Here are 57 lead- ers who serve as ASC company CEOs. G. Edward Alexander (Surgical Development Part- ners). Mr. Alexander is founder, president and CEO of Surgical Development Partners, which partners with physicians and hospitals and provides profes- sional management, project development services as well as access to capital. Before founding SDP, he served as CEO of Surgical Alliance; president and CFO of OrthoLink Physicians; CFO of TeamHealth; and vice president, finance and treasurer of Meda- phis. He has also worked at Deloitte and Touche. David Ayers (Nueterra Healthcare). Mr. Ayers is the executive officer of U.S. operations at Nueterra. He heads the sales team and has more than 30 years of experience in developing and managing hospi- tals and ASCs as well as imaging, physical therapy and urgent care centers. He previously served as regional vice president at HealthSouth. He also participates in advocacy initiatives at the state and federal levels. Robert O. Baratta, MD (Ascent Surgical Partners). Dr. Baratta is currently owner and CEO of Ascent Surgical Partners, an ambulatory surgery center man- agement company; CEO of 3D Custom Collagen; and chairman and CEO of MedAmerica HealthCare Suppliers. A trained ophthalmologist, Dr. Baratta has practiced for 30 years. In 1996, he was elected to the board of directors of FPIC Insurance Group, and in 1999, he was named its chairman. He has also previ- ously served as CEO and vice chairman of Ecosphere Technologies, an environmental firm. He has held leadership positions with professional medical orga- nizations such as the American Academy of Ophthal- mology. Gregary W. Beasley (Ambulatory Surgery Division, Hospital Corporation of America). Mr. Beasley has been with HCA's Ambulatory Surgery Division since 1995 and currently serves as its president. He previously served as COO of the division, and was in charge of daily operations. Mr. Beasley and his team have been responsible for the development and ac- quisition of a number of ASCs, and they focus on the continuous refinement of the operations processes. Before coming to HCA, Mr. Beasley spent nearly four years at HealthSouth Medical Center as controller and COO. He also worked for the VHA and Ernst and Young. Mr. Beasley became a certified public ac- countant in 1989. Kyle Burtnett (United Surgical Partners Interna- tional). Following the completion of Tenet's acquisi- tion of USPI, Mr. Burtnett joined USPI as president of ambulatory services and chief integration officer. He previously served as senior vice president of outpa- tient services at Tenet. He has held a number of lead- ership roles at Tenet, including director of strategic programs, associate in the C2Q program and associ- ate in the leadership development program. He is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy and a former air force officer. Robert Carrera (Pinnacle III). Mr. Carrera is presi- dent and CEO of Pinnacle III. He has spent 15 years developing and managing ASCs, as well as other types of healthcare facilities, such as diagnostic im- aging facilities and occupational medicine clinics. He provides operational and financial expertise as well as business development services for Pinnacle III-man- aged ASCs and physician partners. He is a founder of the Colorado Ambulatory Surgery Center Associa- tion and has formerly served as its vice president. He has played an active role in advocacy at the state level for ASCs in Colorado, Minnesota and Utah. Jesse Chamberlain (Artisan Medical). Mr. Cham- berlain is Artisan Medical's managing partner, wield- ing more than 15 years of experience in healthcare. He has previous experience in healthcare sales, in- ternational sales and product development for John- son & Johnson, Chiron Vision and Bausch & Lomb. Additionally, he managed Procter & Gamble's co-op merchandising agreements compliance program in Cleveland. Artisan Medical is an ASC management and development company. Ravi Chopra (e C/N Group). As founder, presi- dent and CEO of e C/N Group, Mr. Chopra over- sees the activities of the group and its affiliated entities nationwide. He founded the company in 1980, before which he served in various executive management positions in the steel industry. He has held the posi- tion of chief industrial engineer for Youngstown Steel (now International Steel Group) and director of en- gineering services for Wisconsin Steel (now Enviro- dyne Industries). Glenn Cozen, CPA (Physicians Surgery Centers). Mr. Cozen is a founding principal of Physicians Sur- gery Centers, which establishes and managing outpa- tient surgical facilities. Over the course of his career, he has served in numerous executive roles, including as CFO of Southern California Orthopedic Institute in Van Nuys. He headed the development of the in- stitute's physical therapy, MRI and outpatient surgery center ancillary service businesses. He also previously served as western regional vice president of a physi- cian practice management company called BMJ. He co-founded Physicians Surgery Centers in 1999. Ann Deters (Vantage Outsourcing). Ms. Deters is the CEO and co-founder of Vantage Outsourcing, as well as founder of 7D & Associates, an ASC consult- ing and management company. Vantage Outsourcing offers ophthalmic equipment, ophthalmic surgical coordinator technicians and other eye surgery related supplies in 23 states. In 1997, Ms. Deters received INC Magazine's entrepreneur award for the fastest grow- ing small business of the year. Previously, Ms. Deters served as president of Physician Surgery Center in Rolla, Mo., and a managing partner at J. M.
