Dr. Gokaslan le his positions as the director of the Neurosurgical- SpineCenter and vice chairman of neurosurgery at the John Hopkins School of Medicine. • Munish Gupta, MD,will join Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis as the chief of spine surgery in the department of orthopedic surgery on Sept. 1. Dr. Gupta will leave his positions as professor, vice chair of the department of orthopedic surgery, chief of orthopedic spine surgery and co-director of the spine center at the University of California, Davis. • Andrew Hecht, MD,joined Mount Sinai Health Sys- tem and Mount SinaiHospital as chief of spine sur- gery. Dr. Hecht will continue his role as director of the Mount Sinai Spine Center of Mount Sinai Doctors and a surgical consultant to the NY Jets and NY Island- ers. He is also a member of the NFL Brain and Spine Committee. Spine surgeon deaths 55. e following prominent spine surgeons passed away within the last year: • Charles Kuntz IV, MD, of Cincinnati-based Mayfield Clinic, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 50 in February. Local police said he died in his sleep of a seizure. Focusing on complex spine surgery, Dr. Kuntz started at the Mayfield Clinic in 2000. Board-certi- fied, he was a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons and North American Spine Society. • Andrew Parsa, MD, passed away suddenly at the age of 48 in April. He was the neurological surgery chief at the Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. Dr. Parsa performed about 300 surgeries per year. He was leading a trial to test surgery technology for safer rare brain tumor removal. n 8 Pain Physician Moves By Mary Rechtoris John Michels, MD, joined Physician Partners of America, a healthcare management company focused on physician partnerships in ASCs and ancillary services. Dr. Michels is a former Green Bay Packers player and 1997 Super Bowl champion. Pain Management Consultants of Southwest Florida in Fort Meyers welcomed Michael Martinez, MD, to its medical staff. Dr. Martinez is an anesthesiologist and pain manage- ment specialist. Timothy Replogle, MD, joined Pain Management Consultants of South- west Florida in Fort Myers. Dr. Replo- gle is a board-certified anesthesiolo- gist and is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiology. Austin (Texas) Pain Associates added Devin B. Peck, MD, to its physician staff. Dr. Peck focuses on the treat- ment of acute post-surgical pain, chronic musculoskeletal pain, ar- thritis, sports injuries and neck and spinal disorders. Brian Parks, DO, joined Mercy Clin- ic Pain Management in Ada, Okla. Dr. Parks completed his anesthesi- ology residency and pain medicine fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. North Oaks Pain Management in Hammond, La., welcomed Jared Rochelle, MD, to its medical staff. Dr. Rochelle specializes in pain man- agement, diagnosing and managing chronic pain. North American Spine welcomed Jonathan Carlson, MD, to its medi- cal staff. He is an ACGME-accredited pain fellow and double-boarded in anesthesiology and pain management Donald D. Chipman, MD, joined Orthopaedic Associates in Florida. Dr. Chipman completed his pain medicine fellowship at the Medi- cal University of South Carolina in Charleston. n
