36 Transactions & Joint Ventures Great Bend, Kan.-based Centura Health and Hays Medical Center (Hay- sMed) signed a letter of intent to co-own St. Rose Ambulatory & Surgery Center. Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center formed a strategic alliance with Surgical Care Affiliates to manage several of its surgery centers. Newport Beach, Calif.-based Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian has in- vested in Newport Bay Surgery Center, an ophthalmology center. Hurley Health Services, based in Swartz Creek, Mich., and Lapeer (Mich.) County Surgery Center formed a new affiliation agreement. Somers, N.Y.-based Merritt Healthcare opened its Western Connecticut Or- thopedic Surgical Center in Danbury, Conn., which is a partnership among 14 spine, orthopedic and hand surgeons and Merritt Healthcare. Surgical Care Affiliates and Newport Beach, Calif.-based DISC Sports & Spine formed a joint venture. Last quarter Orlando (Fla.) Health invested $1.4 million in Orlando Health/ USP Surgery Centers LLC. Orlando Health/USP Surgery Centers then ac- quired a 51 percent interest in University Surgical Center in Winter Park, Fla., and as of July, Orlando Health owns 25.6 percent, the controlling inter- est, in the center. Davis (Calif.) Surgery Center and UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramen- to created an affiliation agreement that allows UC Davis orthopedic surgeons to perform cases at the surgery center. Mercy Medical Center Sioux City and United Surgical Partners Interna- tional partnered to acquire a majority interest in Siouxland Surgery Cen- ter in Dakota Dunes (S.D.). Orthopaedic Associates of Maryland Surgery Center and Ellicott City Am- bulatory Surgery Center have merged and will consolidate operations in Ellicott City, Md. The ASC merger is a joint venture between Merritt Health- careand 14 physician partners. The Greater Gaston Center could open in Gastonia, N.C., in December or earlier. The center is a joint venture between Physicians Endoscopy and five gastroenterologists. Glendale (Calif.) Adventist Medical Center reopened the Physicians Adven- tist Surgery Center as a joint venture, with local physicians as stakeholders and ASD Management as the managing company. Regent Surgical Health opened the joint venture Plaza Ambulatory Surgery Center in Portland, Ore. — a joint venture between Regent Surgical Health, local physicians and Providence Health & Services.
