14 DEVICES & IMPLANTS Zimmer Biomet partners with CBRE to develop ASCs By Carly Behm Z immer Biomet partnered with CBRE Group to develop orthopedic ASCs as part of a larger plan toward above-market growth, the devicemaker said May 29. CBRE is the world's largest commercial real estate services and investment firm, and the partnership aims to expand patient access to Zimmer Biomet's orthopedic technology, according to a news release. The partnership is part of Zimmer Biomet's larger three-year strategy to bring mid-single-digit revenue growth, raise adjusted earnings per share and grow free cash flow. n Artificial disc replacement to crack $1B by 2030 By Carly Behm T he artificial disc replacement market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 12.3% between 2023 and 2030, according to Vantage Market Research. By 2030, the global artificial disc replacement market is expected to reach $1.3 billion, according to a March 11 news release. One key growth driver is the increased adoption of disc replacement, but the market also faces the challenges of developing devices that best mimic the nature of the human spine. Vantage Market Research identified prominent leaders in the disc replacement market including Medtronic, Orthofix, Globus Medical and Aesculap. n Barrow Neurological Institute launches Neuralink study By Carly Behm Phoenix-based Barrow Neurological Institute was chosen as the inaugural site for the Neuralink PRIME Study. e study will examine Elon Musk's Neuralink implant in patients who have quadriplegia due to vertical spinal cord injury or ALS, according to an April 12 news release. Neuralink has already seen one spine patient benefit from the implant so far. e first implantation was completed in January. e PRIME Study will include patients 22 years and older who have caregivers to support their participation. "When an injury occurs to the essential nervous system, it can disrupt this entire communication process," neurosurgeon Rory Murphy, MD, an investigator in the study, said in the release. "is can affect a person's ability to perform everyday tasks. We remain hopeful that a BCI device may enable a digital bridge between the brain and spinal cord to potentially improve the quality of life for people with severe spinal cord injuries." Mr. Musk's Neuralink has come a long way since its launch. It earned approval for its clinical trials in 2023 but also faced skepticism and concern from physician experts. n ZimVie spine business sells, rebrands as Highridge Medical By Claire Wallace Z imVie has closed on the sale of its spine business to global investment firm H.I.G. Capital. e spine business will now operate as Highridge Medical, based in Westminster, Colo. ZimVie announced intentions to sell its spine business for $375 million in December, turning its focus to the dental industry. e spine business' inaugural board of directors will consist of members that include former executives at Stryker, Medtronic and other industry leaders, according to an April 1 news release shared with Becker's. Eric Major, former president of Stryker Spine and founder of K2M, will serve as executive chairman of the board. Chris O'Connell, former executive vice president and group president at Medtronic, will serve as a board member. Glen Kashuba, former division president at Johnson & Johnson and Zimmer Biomet, will serve as CEO. Former Zimmer Biomet leader Rebecca Whitney will serve as president of global spine and financial professional Vinny Binetti will serve as EBI general manager. n
