18 TRANSACTIONS Orlando Health buys $7.38M medical office building By Claire Wallace Orlando (Fla.) Health has purchased another medical office building near its main campus for $7.38 million, according to a May 8 report from local news station WFTV and the Orlando Business Journal. The two-story building is 18,616 square feet, according to the report. It was sold by an entity connected to Colon & Rectal Clinic of Orlando. The nonprofit health system now has $8.1 billion in assets and reported $5.2 billion in 2022 revenue. n HCA doubles down on outpatient growth: 4 notes By Patsy Newitt N ashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare continues to double down on developing outpatient facilities and increasing outpatient procedure migration, according to an April 21 first-quarter earnings call transcribed by Seeking Alpha. "We continue to invest in our outpatient footprint," Bill Rutherford, HCA's CFO, said during the call. "That should help drive reasonable outpatient surgical growth." Here are three more notes to know: 1. Total outpatient procedures jumped 5 percent and outpatient cardiology procedures increased 7 percent. 2. Surgical volumes in HCA's hospital outpatient units were up slightly more in the first quarter than ASCs, according to the call. 3. The company has a "more significant investment" in its ASC development pipeline, as well as possible acquisitions in the works, CEO Sam Hazen said. n How long has USPI been on top? By Patsy Newitt U nited Surgical Partners International is an ASC powerhouse. With more than 442 ASCs and 24 surgical hospitals across 35 states, it is the largest network in the country. And the company's growth will likely continue: USPI will pump $250 million into ASC mergers and acquisitions and plans to have more than 600 ASCs by 2025. But USPI has not always been the largest ASC chain. Until 2019, AmSurg, Envision's ASC chain, was the largest in the country. In 2018, AmSurg had 261 ASCs, with USPI trailing with 255. By 2019, however, AmSurg had 258 and USPI had 310. In 2021, USPI secured its role as the largest ASC chain with its $1.2 billion acquisition of SurgCenter Development and its 92 ASCs. AmSurg is now the third-largest ASC company, with SCA Health, formerly Surgical Care Affiliates, coming in second with 320 ASCs in 2022. n Capitol Pain Institute expands Midwestern ASC network through new acquisition By Patsy Newitt Nashville, Tenn.-based Capitol Pain Institute is entering the Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minn., metropolitan market through the acquisition of Edina, Minn.-based Nura Pain Clinics. Capitol Pain Institute now serves ASCs and clinics in six states, including Colorado, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Texas and Illinois. Nura's founder and CEO David Schultz, MD, is known in the state for his expertise in intrathecal pain pump implants and spinal cord stimulator implants, according to a May 3 press release. Capitol Pain Institute is backed by private equity partner Iron Path Capital. n
