32 ORTHOPEDICS NuVasive stock jumps 5.8% after single-position spine surgery study — 3 details By Alan Condon N uVasive's stock saw 5.8 percent Jan. 6 after publi- cation of its study regarding single-position spine surgery in The Spine Journal, according to Seeking Alpha. Three details: 1. The study found significant advantages of NuVasive's X360 approach to lateral single-position spine surgery over traditional open fusion. Benefits included fewer complica- tions, less blood loss and reduced length of stay. 2. Researchers evaluated 390 patients who had anterior lumbar interbody fusion and/or lateral lumbar interbody fusion surgery with bilateral percutaneous pedicle screw fixation between L2-S1 3. Single-position lateral surgery reduced operating time by more than three hours and decreased average hospital stay by two days, according to the study. n $714M facility with 50-bed orthopedic institute 'topped off' By Alan Condon H ackensack (N.J.) University Medical Center's Helena Theurer Pavilion, the state's largest healthcare expansion project, reached its structural completion Jan. 11, according to a news release. Three things to know: 1. The nine-story, 530,000-square-foot facility will include a 50-bed orthopedic institute, 24 operating rooms with intraoperative MRI, a 50-bed ICU and 150 private patient rooms. 2. Construction of the $714 million project is expect- ed to be finished by fall 2022. 3. Founded in 1888, Hackensack (N.J.) University Medical Center was Bergen County's first hospital and employs over 8,000 staff, according to its website. n HOPCo, Ascension joint venture spine hostal opens in Florida; Georgia expansion planned By Alan Condon A joint venture orthopedic and spine hospi- tal opened Jan. 4 at Ascension St. Vincent's Southside campus in Jacksonville, Fla., accord- ing to the Jacksonville Daily Record. The Performance Orthopedics and Spine Specialty Hospital is a partnership between Ascension Florida and Gulf Coast, Phoenix-based Healthcare Outcomes Performance Co. and Southeast Orthopedic Special- ists in Jacksonville. St. Vincent and HOPCo, a musculoskeletal value- based health outcomes management provider, plan to expand further into Florida and Southeast Georgia this year. They will develop the specialty hospital and add ASCs in the region, according to the report. The organizations aim to develop a clinically integrated network of physician practices in the region, which will comprise physicians from Southeast Orthopedic Spe- cialists, Ascension and those in the local community. n 3 orthopedic practice mergers with 279+ physicians beginning operations in 2021 By Alan Condon T he back end of 2020 saw three significant orthope- dic practice mergers announced in Texas, Tennes- see and Missouri, which will involve more than 279 physicians: 1. Six orthopedic practices in Texas merged to form Ortho- LoneStar in January. The combined entity has more than 150 physicians, over 40 locations and 1,000 employees. Bryan Williamson, MD, serves as medical director of the group, which is 100 percent physician-owned. 2. Nashville-based Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance, Knox- ville-based Tennessee Orthopaedic Clinics and Columbia- based Mid-Tennessee Bone & Joint Clinic agreed in August to merge into a single group. The new organization has a combined 104 physicians, more than 27 locations and over 800 employees. 3. Leawood. Kan.-based Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Consultants and Dickson-Diveley Orthopaedics will merge March 1, with further expansion plans potentially in the works. The newly formed group will have more than 120 employees, including 25 physicians. n
