29 PRACTICE MANAGEMENT The Joint Commission finalizes total hip and knee replacement performance measures — 5 insights By Angie Stewart T he Joint Commission deter- mined four new performance mea- sures for its Total Hip and Knee. Replacement Certification in collaboration with an advisory panel. Here are five insights. 1. e four THKR measures for certification are Regional Anesthesia; Postoperative Am- bulation on the Day of Surgery; Discharged to Home; and Preoperative Functional/ Health Status Assessment. 2. As of Jan. 1, e Joint Commission re- quires programs seeking the disease-specific care certification and ones that are currently certified to collect monthly data on the four measures. Organizations must report the data to e Joint Commission through the Certification Measure Information Process each quarter. 3. The advisory panel included experts in orthopedic surgery, anesthesia, physical therapy, perioperative nursing, social work and more. The Joint Commission consid- ered public input and tested the measures. 4. e Joint Commission created two guides with specifications on the four mandatory measures: one for inpatient implementation and one for outpatient implementation. 5. CMS reports significant variance in the quality and cost of care for THKR surger- ies. n Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center to compete with $50M orthopedic hospital: 5 things to know By Mackenzie Garrity W ith its lease at St. Thomas Health in Akron, Ohio, ending in December 2020, Crystal Clinic is developing a new orthopedic facility in Fair- lawn, Ohio, for $100 million, according to Crain's Cleveland Business. Here are five things to know. 1. The new clinic will include 60 beds for specialty orthopedic surgery and nonsurgical care services. 2. Crystal Clinic's specialty hospital will also be equipped with 12 operating rooms. In addition to the inpatient hospital, the group provides outpatient ser- vices at 11 locations across the state. 3. Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center has been providing services at St. Thomas Health, part of Summa Health System, since 2009, after Crystal Clinic and Sum- ma Health formed a joint venture. 4. The new Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center will compete with Lake Health's specialty hospital in Beachwood, Ohio, which is currently under construction. The $50 million hospital is expected to open in early 2019. 5. In 2017, Crystal Clinic surgeons performed approximately 15,000 surgeries. n Self-employed orthopedists earn $38k more than employed: 8 statistics By Megan Wood O rthopedists earn an average annual compensation of $497,000, ac- cording to the "Medscape Orthopedist Compensation Report 2018." Here are additional statistics on orthopedists' compensation. 1. Self-employed orthopedists earn $536,000 compared to $469,000 for em- ployed orthopedists. 2. Male orthopedists earn $507,000 compared to $364,000 for female ortho- pedists. 3. Fifty-one percent of orthopedists feel fairly compensated. 4. Of those orthopedists unsatisfied with their compensation, 34 percent be- lieve they should earn 11 percent to 25 percent more annually. 5. Thirty-three percent of orthopedists unsatisfied with their compensation think they should earn 26 percent to 50 percent more each year." n
