33 PATIENT EXPERIENCE Q: What can nurses or other caregiv- ers do to improve the care process for all involved? CD: Nurse managers have a tremendous impact on both nurse and patient outcomes. But we don't always prepare nurse managers for how to be successful. We pluck great healthcare providers out of their clinical role and put them in a management role, expecting them to automatically be great managers, too. We show them how to budget and schedule and then say, "Go to it." But we're not teaching them how to lead, mentor and develop a team. So I think focusing on leadership development is important. Team building is also important. We unite people with different experience levels and cultural norms all together in a unit or office and challenge them to achieve quality outcomes, but we don't give them a chance to become a cohesive team. is goes back to making sure leaders understand team members must be at the table to help them. In a hospital unit, you can't just get the nurs- es together. You also have to include all the people who help take care of patients on that unit, including environmental services, the lab and pharmacy. n Disney pledges $100M to enhance the patient experience at children's hospitals By Alia Paavola A s part of a new initiative to reinvent the patient experi- ence, The Walt Disney Co. pledged more than $100 million in cash, products and services to children's hospitals worldwide. Leveraging their global experts in theme park and family entertain- ment design, dubbed "imagineers," the company plans to introduce Disney-themed elements into the patient care setting. In particular, the company will allow patients to choose their favorite Disney charac- ters to surround them during their stay using a RFID-based system, create themed treatment rooms with interactive murals and make Disney entertainment available in rooms and themed pop-up movie theaters. "Using the powerful combination of our beloved characters and legendary creativity, we're planning to transform the patient experience in children's hospitals around the world — creating a personalized and engaging atmo- sphere that will inspire young patients and ease the stress of a hospital stay," said Robert Iger, chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Co. Houston-based Texas Children's Hospital will be the first hospital to collaborate with Disney on the initiative.
