37 JOINT VENTURES 10 things to know about Surgical Care Affiliates By Angie Stewart D eerfield, Ill.-based Surgical Care Affiliates is one of the largest ASC operators in the U.S., with a network of more than 7,500 physicians and 200 surgi- cal facilities generating over $2 billion in total revenue. About 1 million procedures are performed in SCA facilities every year. Here are 10 things to know. 1. Healthcare services pioneer Joel Gordon, HCA executive Andrew "Woody" Miller and HCA co-founder Jack Massey founded Surgi- cal Care Affiliates in 1982. 2. From 1996 to 2005, Mr. Gordon served as director of HealthSouth, which bought Surgical Care Affiliates in 1996. Mr. Gordon is now principal of e Gordon Group, a private investment firm, and director for the Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University Medical Center, the University School of Nashville and the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee in Nashville. Andrew Hayek served as CEO of SCA from 2008 to 2018, leading the company through a public offering, significant growth in revenue and facility operations and an acquisition by Optum. Prior to his roles at SCA, Mr. Hayek was a division president at DaVita Healthcare Partners and president and COO of Alliance Healthcare Services. 3. UnitedHealth's subsidiary Optum acquired SCA in 2017 for $2.3 billion. SCA became part of OptumCare, Optum's primary and urgent care delivery services business. 4. SCA was previously private-equity funded by TPG Capital prior to the Optum sale. TPG owned about 30 percent of SCA before the Optum transaction but agreed to tender its shares as part of the offer, CNBC reported. 5. Optum posted $91.2 billion in revenue for 2017, a growth of 9.1 percent year-over-year. Revenues for the OptumHealth segment grew 21.7 percent year-over-year to $20.6 billion. 6. Before the merger with Optum, SCA re- ported $1.3 billion in revenue and $148.7 mil- lion in EBITDA at the end of fiscal year 2016. 7. Tony Kilgore joined SCA in 2011 and served as group president before replacing Andrew Hayek as SCA's CEO in January 2018. Mr. Hayek became CEO of OptumHealth. 8. SCA grew quickly last year, adding six ASCs to its network by October 2017. e company's investments included Columbia, S.C.-based Midlands Orthopaedics Surgery Center and Brandon (Fla.) Ambulatory Surgery Center. 9. At the end of 2017, SCA announced a 10 percent investment in a new ASC in Portland, Ore., in partnership with Renton, Wash.-based Providence Health & Services. Construction began in April. 10. SCA is the corporate partner of One World Surgery, a nonprofit created to provide global access to high-quality surgery care.
