The list features national physician leaders dedicated to strengthening their organizations through physician leadership development, patient safety initiatives and quality improvement. The physicians featured on this list are proven leaders in the field with extensive clinical and team building experience. Many have had execu- tive leadership positions at multiple hospitals and health systems, over- seeing efforts to expand health IT, improve the patient experience and build an overall positive culture for their organizations. The Becker's editorial team accepted nominations for this list and select- ed CMOs and other equivalent titles through an editorial review process. James Adams, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of North- western Memorial HealthCare (Chicago). As senior vice presi- dent and CMO, Dr. Adams is responsible for overseeing the medical staff and academic affairs for Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, which was ranked among the top 20 health systems on U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals Honor Roll for 2017-18. In addition to his leadership posi- tions, Dr. Adams has served as a professor and chair of the department of emergency medicine at Northwestern Memorial HealthCare since 2000, where he aims to positively influence ethics, professionalism and com- munication in the healthcare setting. Dr. Adams has also authored more than 91 academic publications. David Adinaro. Vice President and CMO of St. Joseph's Uni- versity Medical Center and CMIO of St. Joseph's Health Sys- tem (Paterson, N.J.). Dr. Adinaro joined St. Joseph's Health System in 2003 as a physician and rose in the ranks to become chief of emergency medicine, patient safety officer, residency research director and associate director before becoming CMIO of the system in 2015. He also currently serves as CMO of St. Joseph's University Medical Center and is responsi- ble for expanding the role of IT across the health system. He previously served as president of the New Jersey chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Mohammed Shafeeq Ahmed, MD. Vice President of Med- ical Affairs and CMO of Howard County General Hospital (Columbia, Md.) As CMO of Howard County General Hospital, Dr. Ahmed provides administrative oversight and service support for 1,900 full-time and part-time employees, including 950 physicians. He is also responsible for integrating Howard County General Hospital's service and quality care standards with those of its parent organization, Balti- more-based Johns Hopkins Medicine. Before joining HCGH, Dr. Ahmed served as COO and CMO of Springfield, Mass.-based Baystate Health's Eastern Region. Todd J. Albert, MD. Surgeon-in-Chief and Medical Director of Hospital for Special Surgery (New York City). Dr. Albert is re- sponsible for the clinical staff at HSS, which performs more than 30,000 surgical procedures each year. U.S. News & World Report named the hos- pital No. 1 in the nation for orthopedics for 2017-18. In addition to his leadership roles, Dr. Albert serves as a professor and chairman of the department of orthopedic surgery at New York City-based Weill Cornell Medical College. He has authored more than 40 book chapters and pub- lished more than 375 academic articles. He was previously chairman of the department of orthopedics and president of The Rothman Institute at Jefferson in Philadelphia. Scott Anders, MD. CMO of Tenet Physician Resources (Dal- las). Dr. Anders works with Tenet's chief clinical officer to enhance the health system's position as a high-value care provider. As CMO of Tenet Physician Resources, Dr. Anders supports physician recruitment and retention efforts, company and market growth, clinical and quality strategies, technology integration, and patient experience improvement. Throughout his tenure at Tenet, Dr. Anders has overseen the health sys- tem's MACRA preparation and managed Tenet Physician Resources' meaningful use and quality reporting efforts, which resulted in a net benefit of more than $30 million to the health system from 2014 to 2016. Stanley W. Ashley, MD. Senior Vice President for Clinical Af- fairs and CMO of Brigham and Women's Hospital (Boston). A board-certified surgeon, Dr. Ashley currently serves as vice president for clinical affairs and CMO of Brigham and Women's Hospital. His clinical interests include cancer surgery, Crohn's disease and gastric cancer. He previously received funding from the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for his research, which focuses on the pathophysiology of the small bowel and pancreas. In addition to his executive roles, he also serves as the Frank Sawyer Professor of Sur- gery at Boston-based Harvard Medical School. Brigham and Women's Hospital, the No. 2 hospital in Massachusetts in 2018 according to U.S. News & World Report, serves as the primary teaching hospital for Har- vard Medical School. Thomas Balcezak, MD. CMO of Yale New Haven (Conn.) Hos- pital. Dr. Balcezak was appointed CMO of Yale New Haven Hospital in September 2016. In his role, Dr. Balcezak addresses the needs of the hospital's 12,700 employees, including a 4,248-member medical staff. He is also in charge of graduate medical education, patient safety, and clinical quality and regulatory readiness, among other responsibilities. Dr. Balcezak previously served as senior vice president and chief quality officer of the hospital, which was ranked among the top 20 hospitals for geriatrics and psychiatry by U.S. News & World Report for 2017-18. Harneet Bath, MD. Vice President and CMO of OSF St. Antho- ny Medical Center (Rockford, Ill.). Dr. Bath assumed the vice pres- ident and CMO position at the 250-plus bed OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in 2014. He previously served as the regional medical director for Valley Emergency Physicians, an affiliate of Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock, Calif., where he was also medical director of the hospitalist pro- gram. He also has experience creating four residency programs at Eman- uel. In his current role, Dr. Bath oversees a medical staff of 491 clinicians. David L. Battinelli, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of Northwell Health (Great Neck, N.Y.). In his role as senior vice president and CMO, Dr. Battinelli is responsible for overseeing all clin- ical, educational and operational issues related to Northwell Health's medical and clinical affairs. He previously held a variety of other lead- ership positions with the 22-hospital system, including chief academic officer and senior vice president of academic affairs. A board-certified internist, Dr. Battinelli came to Northwell from Boston Medical Center, where he served as a vice chair for education and program director of the internal medicine residency program at the Boston University School of Medicine. Along with his executive roles at Northwell, Dr. Battinelli serves as the Betsy Cushing Whitney Professor of Medicine and dean of medical education at Hempstead, N.Y.-based Donald and Barbara Zuck- er School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Sunny Bhatia, MD. CMO of Prime Healthcare Division I (On- tario, Calif.). As CMO of Prime Healthcare Division I, Dr. Bhatia is responsible for the clinical affairs at the health system's 17 hospitals in California and Nevada. He also serves as CMO of 99-bed Sherman Oaks
