22 JOINT VENTURES Which ASC Company has Grown the Most in 2017? By Laura Dyrda A SC companies are continuing to expand, acquiring centers and part- nering with physicians on de novo ASCs. Here is a snapshot of company growth over the past eight months for seven ASC companies. Note: Totals include the ASCs that have opened in 2017 and centers expected to open through the end of the year. Exact numbers were not available for all ASC companies. SurgCenter Development (25) In February, SurgCenter Development opened its 100th center: Grand Rapids (Mich.) Surgical Suites. e company now has 105 centers aer signing on 17 new de novo centers and licensing eight ASCs this year. SurgCenter Development centers focus on orthopedics, otorhinolaryngology and occuloplastics. e company's facilities treat more than 190,000 patients annually and provided around 7,000 joint replacements in 2016. Physicians Endoscopy (17) Physicians Endoscopy has added 17 centers so far in 2017, three of which are currently under development. e GI-focused chain has 58 centers under its belt with 55 current- ly open and operational. In April, Frontier Healthcare became part of Physicians Endos- copy, which has partnerships with more than 550 gastroenterologists who perform more than 490,000 procedures annually. Surgical Care Affiliates (9) Six ASCs joined Surgical Care Affiliates' network so far in 2017, and the company developed two de novo centers with a third expected to open before the end of the year. In January, UnitedHealth Group announced plans to acquired Surgical Care Affiliates, then a 205-center company, for $2.3 billion and combine the company with United- Health Group's OptumCare business. AmSurg (6)* As of June 30, AmSurg added six new ASCs, bringing its total number of centers to 263. e company, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in April, merged with Envision Healthcare in December 2016. AmSurg physicians have performed more than 12 million procedures over the past decade and currently have partnerships with more than 2,000 physicians. Regent Surgical Health (3) Regent Surgical Health worked with physi- cian partners to open Surgery Center of Wasilla (Alaska), Mt. Pleasant (Pa.) Surgery Center and East Hills (N.Y.) Surgery Center so far in 2017. Aer East Hills opened, Regent will have 23 surgery centers across the country. Tenet: (3)* As of June 30, Tenet had around 460 outpa- tient centers, including three ASCs added during the first half of the year. In the second quarter of 2017, the company reported 2.8 percent increase in ambulatory segment revenue but 0.5 percent decrease in ambula- tory cases. Surgery Partners Surgery Partners reported 103 surgical facilities as of June 30, and completed its $760 million acquisition of National Surgical Healthcare in August to bring the company's surgical facility ownership count to around 125 facilities across 32 states. Surgery Part- ners' network includes around 5,000 physi- cians as well as surgical hospital, diagnostic laboratory, multispecialty physician practice and urgent care facility locations. *As of June 30, 2017. n 7 Hospitals, Health Systems Opening or Planning ASCs By Eric Oliver Here are seven hospitals and health systems that recently opened or announced plans for ASCs. Columbia, Md.-based MedStar Health opened an orthopedic "super center" with an ASC in Timonium, Md. Duluth, Minn.-based Essentia Health held a groundbreaking ceremony to expand its clinic and ASC in Grand Rapids, Minn. New York City-based NYU Langone is in the midst of planning an $84 million ASC to add to its Sunset Park campus. Methodist McKinney (Texas) Hospital opened Methodist Craig Ranch Surgery Center in McKinney, Texas. Naples (Fla.) Community Hospital is seeking city approval to build a clinic with an ASC, despite officials rejecting the proposal in the past. York, Pa.-based WellSpan Health has plans to build an outpatient center in Penn Township, Pa. Lake Charles-based Christus Health Southwestern Louisiana entered into a joint venture with Prien, La.-based Impe- riale Calcasieu Surgical Center. n
