31 QUALITY IMPROVEMENT & MEASUREMENT Hospital Quality Influences Readmission Rates Independent of Patient Factors By Anuja Vaidya A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine examined readmission outcomes among patients with similar diagnosis to hospitals in different perfor- mance quartiles. Researchers divided CMS' hospitalwide readmission measure cohort from July 2014 through June 2015 into two random samples of Medicare recipients. e researchers calculated the risk-standardized readmission rate within 30 days for each hospital. ey also classified hospitals into performance quartiles, with a lower readmission rate indicating better performance. The study included 37,508 patients who had two admissions for similar diagnoses at 4,272 dif- ferent hospitals. These admissions occurred more than one month and less than one year apart. e median risk-standardized readmission rate was 15.5 percent. e observed readmis- sion rate was consistently higher among patients admitted to hospitals in a low-performing quartile than among those admitted to hospitals in a high-performing quartile. However, the difference was only significant when comparing admissions to hos- pitals in the highest-performing quartile and the lowest-performing quartile. n How the Pioneer ACOs Stacked Up on Shared Savings, Quality in 2016 By Morgan Haefner T he majority of Pioneer ACOs ended the mod- el's final performance year with at least $1 million in shared savings, according to data CMS released Oct. 13.
