44 44 CEO/STRATEGY 6 Major Healthcare Salary and Employment Trends to Know By Kelly Gooch J ob demand and salary continue to in- crease within healthcare despite in- dustry uncertainties, according to the Health eCareers 2017–2018 Salary Guide. For the guide, Health eCareers surveyed nearly 20,000 healthcare professionals in its database between March 16, 2017 and June 8, 2017. Here are six findings. Salary 1. e survey showed most respondents (87 percent) are receiving more or the same pay as last year. Only 12 percent said they are re- ceiving less pay. 2. Respondents cited "changed employers," "merit raise" and "mandated companywide increases" as the most common reasons for pay increases. 3. Physicians and surgeons reported an av- erage salary of $258,039, the highest among respondent groups, according to the sur- vey. Executives reported an average salary of $158,637, followed by physician assis- tants ($108,311) and nurse practitioners ($102,523). 4. e survey showed registered nurses re- ported an average salary of $70,734, up 5 per- cent compared to last year. Job Demand 5. Less than half of respondents (46 percent) are "very confident" they can find a new job in their healthcare field, and 41 percent are "somewhat confident." 6. irty-six percent of respondents said turnover at their organizations grew last year, and 49 percent of respondents said the time necessary to fill positions also increased, ac- cording to the survey. n New Healthy Menu Item at Geisinger: The Feinburger, in Honor of CEO Dr. David Feinberg By Alyssa Rege D anville, Pa.-based Geisinger Health System introduced a menu item to coincide with National Cheeseburger Day Sept. 18 and named the dish in honor of the health sys- tem's top executive, according to The Daily Item. The "Feinburger," named for David Feinberg, MD, president and CEO of Geisinger, comprises 14 meatless ingredients, including grains, celery, carrots, onions and seasonings. The burger is currently only available to patients but will be add- ed to the health system's retail menus next week, according to the report. Geisinger Corporate Foodservice Team Executive Chef Matthew Cervay told The Daily Item the idea for the burger came after he attended a barbeque at the Feinbergs' home. "[The Feinbergs] are really into clean eating, whole grains, le- gumes and very little meat," Mr. Cervay said. "I kind of still wanted to give the barbecue cookout feel, so I did a grass-fed burger, but I also wanted to do a vegetarian and vegan offering as well." The health system has implemented a variety of initiatives to create healthier menu options for patients and their families. In 2010, the health system eliminated trans fats from all menu options; in 2011, officials removed fryers from the facility's kitch- ens; and in 2016, Geisinger introduced a sodium limit on items under the menu's healthy selections. Officials also said in August they plan to eliminate all sugary beverages from its facility beginning Jan. 1. n Why This Company Is Integrating Talent Management Into Its C-Suite By Leo Vartorella S t. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch is one of the largest brewing companies in the world and owes the success of its personnel to a focus on talent management within its C-suite, according to an op-ed in Chief Executive. Sandro Bassili, Anheuser-Busch's head of peo- ple, wrote that involving C-suite executives in the recruitment process not only ensures that only the most qualified candidates are hired, but demonstrates the company's commitment to those candidates. He argued that a company's success is ulti- mately dependent upon the motivation of its employees, and nothing makes employees feel more valued then engaging with the company's top executives. "Our industry is highly competitive and com- plex, so continuing to attract great people and build a meritocracy where people advance based on results, ability and commitment is a top priority," wrote Mr. Bassili. "When our C-suite is spending full days recruiting under- grads, our people realize that we truly believe people are our greatest asset." n
