185 PRACTICE MANAGEMENT THOUGHT LEADERSHIP Hospital and Health System Transactions Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare will sell its two Philadelphia hospitals to El Se- gundo, Calif.-based Paladin Healthcare for $170 million, to help lighten its debt burden of $15 billion. Peconic Bay Medical Center in River- head, N.Y., part of New Hyde Park, N.Y.- based Northwell Health, plans to ac- quire the former Suffolk County National Bank campus for an expansion. Under a consolidation plan, Camden, N.J.-based Cooper University Health Care will acquire Camden-based Lourdes Health System and Trenton, N.J.-based St. Francis Medical Center. PinnacleHealth, a seven-hospital sys- tem in Harrisburg, Pa., has joined Pitts- burgh-based UPMC. Charlotte, N.C.-based Carolinas Health- Care System signed a letter of intent to merge with Chapel Hill, N.C.-based UNC Health Care, forming one of the nation's largest hospital chains. TriHealth, a five-hospital system in Cin- cinnati, and Edgewood, Ky.-based St. Elizabeth Healthcare signed a letter of intent in early August to embark on a joint venture outpatient laboratory. Brentwood, Tenn.-based Quorum Health signed a definitive agreement to sell L.V. Stabler Memorial Hospital, a 72-bed facility in Greenville, Ala., to the Health Care Authority of the City of Greenville – L.V. Stabler Hospital, a public corporation. Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare plans to divest eight hospitals in four U.S. markets, including Philadelphia, as well as nine fa- cilities in the United Kingdom. Hancock Medical Center in Bay Saint Louis, Miss., entered a long-term, cap- ital lease agreement with New Orle- ans-based Ochsner Health System. Pensacola, Fla.-based Sacred Heart Health System and UF Health Shand- sCair, the critical transport system for the University of Florida Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, partnered to provide ground and air transportation to Sacred Heart patients beginning in October. Salina (Kan.) Regional Health Center and Geary Community Hospital in Junction City, Kan., entered into a peri- od of due diligence Aug. 24 to form a strategic alliance. Port Townsend, Wash.-based Jefferson Healthcare officials said the health sys- tem is backing off its proposed acqui- sition of Discovery Behavioral Health, also in Port Townsend, and is instead pursuing a "tight affiliation." Cleveland Clinic reportedly signed a management consulting agreement with an unnamed organization to build a hospital in Shanghai July 1. A Boston-based Partners HealthCare executive said the health system plans to hold off on finalizing its proposed ac- quisition of Providence, R.I.-based Care New England Health System until CNE's finances improve. The State of Georgia Office of the At- torney General approved the proposed sale of Oconee Regional Medical Cen- ter in Milledgeville, Ga., to a subsidiary of Macon, Ga.-based Navicent Health Aug. 21. Charleston, W.Va.-based HHA Inc., the parent company of Charleston, W.Va.-based Highland Hospital, ap- proved a definitive agreement to sell various facilities to Brentwood, Tenn.- based Meridian Behavioral Health Systems Aug. 11. St. Louis-based BJC Healthcare sold Mineral Area Regional Medical Cen- ter, a shuttered 127-bed facility in Farm- ington, Mo., for $13 in May. Clark Regional Medical Center, a 79- bed community hospital in Winchester, Ky., joined the Lexington-based Univer- sity of Kentucky Markey Cancer Cen- ter Affiliate Network Aug. 22. St. Louis-based Ascension, the nation's largest nonprofit Catholic health sys- tem, signed a nonbinding letter of intent to acquire Chicago-based Presence Health, Illinois' largest Catholic health system. Gundersen Health System, a four-hos- pital system in La Crosse, Wis., acquired Moundview Memorial Hospital & Clinics in Friendship, Wis. Atlanta-based Northside Hospital and Lawrenceville, Ga.-based Gwinnett Health System submitted their merger proposal to the State of Georgia Office of the Attorney General for review. Elizabethtown, Ky.-based Hardin Memo- rial Health's board of trustees agreed to sign a letter of intent to consolidate with Baptist Health, a nine-hospital system in Louisville, Ky., Aug. 15.
