Seattle Children's Hospital n DOJ Charges 412 in $1.3B Healthcare Fraud Sweep By Ayla Ellison T he Department of Justice has charged 412 defendants, including 115 physicians, nurses and other licensed medical professionals, in a nationwide healthcare fraud sweep. The defendants allegedly participated in healthcare fraud schemes in- volving $1.3 billion in false billings. More than 120 defendants were charged with illegally prescribing and distributing opioids and other narcotics. In addition to the arrests, HHS initiated actions to suspend the licenses of 295 providers, including physicians, nurses and pharmacists, according to the DOJ. "Too many trusted medical professionals like doctors, nurses, and phar- macists have chosen to violate their oaths and put greed ahead of their patients," said Attorney General Jeff Sessions. "They seem oblivious to the disastrous consequences of their greed. Their actions not only enrich themselves often at the expense of taxpayers but also feed addictions and cause addictions to start." n Bloomberg: UnitedHealth to Acquire Advisory Board's Healthcare Arm By Morgan Haefner M innetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealth Group plans to acquire The Advisory Board's healthcare division, sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg. Here are five things to know. 1. No deal has been inked. A formal announcement may not arrive for a month due to the deal's complexity, the sources said, who asked for anonymity because discussions remain private. 2. The Advisory Board's shares climbed as much as 14 percent on July 6, reaching their greatest value in two years. As of 3:51 p.m. on July 6, the stock was up 4.8 percent to $54.75, making the Board's market value $2.2 billion. 3. Sales from The Advisory Board's healthcare arm fell 6.6 percent in the company's first quarter, the report states. The business provides consult- ing and research projects spanning bill collection, patient care improve- ments and provider strategy. 4. Spokespeople from The Advisory Board and UnitedHealth de- clined Bloomberg's request for comment. 5. UnitedHealth has recently been growing its technology, consult- ing and healthcare delivery subsidiary Optum. Deerfield, Ill.-based Surgical Care Affiliates and Optum merged earlier this year. n
