22 PRACTICE MANAGEMENT American Orthopaedic Association Names New President: 4 Points By Mackenzie Garrity T he American Orthopaedic Association installed Regis J. O'Keefe, MD, PhD, as president and Rick Wright, MD, as first president-elect on June 23 during AOA's annual meeting in Charlotte, N.C. Chris- topher D. Harner, MD, was voted in as second presi- dent-elect the same day. Here are five points: 1. Drs. O'Keefe and Wright are executive chair holders at Washington University in St. Louis. Previously, Dr. O'Keefe served as president of the Ortho- paedic Research Society and the United States Bone and Joint Decade. 3. After earning his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in Boston, Dr. O'Keefe completed his residency in orthopedics at the University of Rochester (N.Y.) Medical Center. 4. Dr. Wright earned his medical degree from the Univer- sity of Missouri Columbia and completed his residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. He is fellowship trained in sports medicine from the Minneap- olis Sports Medicine Center. 5. Michael Bronson, MD, will direct the Orthopaedic Center at Mount Sinai West. 3. The Mount Sinai Health System is comprised of seven hospital campuses and single medical schools with an ex- tensive ambulatory network and a range of inpatient and outpatient services. 5. The health system includes approximately 7,100 primary and specialty care physicians, 12 joint venture ambulatory surgery centers, over 140 ambulatory practices and 31 af- filiated community health centers. n 3 Most Important Points on Physician Employment Contracts By Scott Becker, Publisher of Becker's Healthcare, and Mackenzie Garrity T he three most important issues in negotiating employment contracts generally include: 1. e compensation terms. Is it a base salary or base-plus bonuses contract, or is it more fully based on productivity? e more senior physicians are in practice, traditionally, the more they are focused on productivity. How- ever when physicians sell their practices or join new employers, they oen want a serious guaranteed base and term. 2. e termination provisions. How easy is it for the practice or hospital to terminate the physician or the physician to terminate the contract? Can termination be without cause and on how short a time period? In contrast, must the employer show cause to terminate the contract? Here if termination without cause, the physician typically wants a longer, rather than a shorter notice period. 3. Are there restrictive covenants? If so, how long are they for and how large a mileage ra- dius? Can they be bought out? Does the state have a law restricting non-competes? ese vary from area-to-area and specialty-to-spe- cialty. n
