15 60 Critical Access Hospital CEOs to Know | 2017 By Laura Dyrda, Eric Oliver, Julie Spitzer, Leo Vartorella and Brian Zimmerman B ecker's Healthcare is pleased to recognize the following 60 CEOs, presidents and administrators of critical access hos- pitals. The men and women included on this list are at the helm of organi- zations regularly recognized for safety and quality. Many led their hospitals through expansions, mergers and EHR implementations. The individuals on this list are also key members of the community, serving on corporate boards and state-level initiatives to improve access to care. This list highlights individuals who lead the hospitals featured on the Becker's Healthcare 62 Critical Access Hospitals to Know list, published in July. Note: Leaders are presented in alphabetical order. Individuals and institutions cannot pay for inclusion on this list. Todd Almendinger. President and CEO of Magruder Hospital (Port Clinton, Ohio). Mr. Almendinger became president and CEO of Magruder Hospital in 2012 after serving as the hospital's vice president and CEO for six years. Mr. Almendinger previously served as vice president of finance and CFO at Delaware, Ohio- based Grady Memorial Hospital. He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and Healthcare Financial Man- agement Association. Rebecca Beck. President of Hawkins County Memorial Hospital (Rogersville, Tenn.) and Hancock County Hospital (Sneedville, Tenn.). Ms. Beck became director of surgical services at Wellmont Health System's Bristol (Tenn.) Regional Medical Center in 2012 and was promoted to president of Wellmont's Hawkins County Memorial Hospital and Hancock County Hospital in 2015. She has spent 13 years with the health system. During her time with Bristol Medical Center, she improved first case on-time starts by 25 per- cent and spearheaded business growth and development. Arthur Blank. President and CEO of Mount Desert Island Hos- pital (Bar Harbor, Maine). Mr. Blank began his tenure as CEO of Mount Desert Island Hospital in 1999. He oversaw the hospital's ef- forts to forge a teaching partnership with Philadelphia-based Penn Medicine, establish a nonprofit retirement community and incor- porate nine community health centers. Mr. Blank helped grow the hospital from a 10-bed facility into a 25-bed critical access hospital. Paula Chermside. CEO of Aspirus Ironwood (Mich.) Hospital & Clinics. Ms. Chermside was named CEO of Aspirus Ironwood Hos- pital in May 2016 after spending three years as the hospital's COO. During her tenure as COO, Ms. Chermside oversaw an expansion and renovation of the hospital's emergency department, helped im- plement a new EHR system and spearheaded the design and con- struction of a new outpatient clinic. Chad Cooper. CEO of Riverwood Healthcare Center (Aikin, Minn.). Mr. Cooper became CEO of Riverwood Healthcare Center in July 2013. During his career, which spans nearly two decades, Mr. Cooper has led both independent and system-based healthcare organizations, including Little Falls, Minn.-based Unity Family Healthcare and Pierre, S.D.-based St. Mary's Healthcare Center. In 2017, the National Rural Health Association recognized Riverwood Healthcare Center as a Top 20 Critical Access Hospital. Edgar J. Curtis, BSN. President and CEO of Abraham Lincoln (Ill.) Memorial Health System. Mr. Curtis became CEO of Springfield, Ill.- based Memorial Health System in 2008. He oversees the system's sev- en affiliates, including Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital, a 25-bed critical access hospital. Under his leadership, the health system's annual revenue grew from $500 million to $1 billion. Mr. Curtis also serves as chair of the Illinois Health and Hospital Association Board of Directors. Mark Dalley. Administrator of Gunnison (Utah) Valley Hospital. Mr. Dalley became administrator of Gunnison Valley Hospital in August 2011 after serving as president and CEO of Ontario, Ore.- based Holy Rosary Medical Center, an affiliate of Englewood, Co- lo.-based Catholic Health Initiatives. In 2016, the Utah Hospital As- sociation, in conjunction with the American Hospital Association, presented Mr. Dalley with the Grassroots Champion Award. The accolade recognizes healthcare leaders who educate elected officials on major issues affecting hospitals and healthcare. Eugene Della. President of Fairview Hospital (Great Barrington, Mass.) and BMC Hillcrest Campus (Pittsfield, Mass.). Mr. Della joined BMC Hillcrest in 1962 and was named president and COO in 1981. He continued to serve as president of Hillcrest after the hospital merged with Berkshire Health System and Berkshire Med- ical Center in 1996. In 1999, Mr. Della also became president of Fairview Hospital. He is the president of the Berkshire Community College Foundation and serves on the board of directors for the Chamber of Commerce of the Berkshires. Jenny Derks. Chief Administrative Officer of Calumet Medical Center (Chilton, Wis.). Ms. Derks became chief administrative of- ficer of Appleton, Wis.-based Affinity Health System and St. Lou- is-based Ascension's Calumet Medical Center in November 2016. She previously served as the human resources manager at Appleton, Wis.-based Ministry Health Care. In 2016, Calumet Medical Center earned a spot on the Hospital & Health Network's Most Wired list.
