Summa Health System recorded a $30 million operating surplus last year, yet this year it has a steep deficit, which interim presi- dent and CEO Cliff Deveny, MD, attributes to declining patient volumes, healthcare industry changes and concerns over patient access. In a memo sent to employees June 26, Dr. Deveny said abrupt changes must be made to protect the health system in the long-term, according to the report. Approximately half of the 300 positions on the chopping block were vacant, and the system planned to provide outplacement services to the remaining employees. "While the primary goal is to eliminate administrative layers in the organization, all functions are affected," Dr. Deveny wrote in the memo. In addition to job cuts, the health system planned to consolidate or discontinue various services to balance the budget. n 3 Health System CEOs With Highest Employee Approval Ratings By Tamara Rosin T hree health system CEOs received Glassdoor's annual Employees' Choice Awards, which honors the 100 highest employee-rated U.S. CEOs in 2017. Craig B. Thompson, MD, president and CEO of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, was the highest ranked health system CEO, coming in at No. 4. Michael Dowling, pres- ident and CEO of New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health, was the second highest ranked health system CEO (No. 67), and Bernard J. Tyson, chairman and CEO of Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente was the third (No. 68). The Glassdoor Employees' Choice Awards are based on the input of employees who voluntarily provide anonymous feed- back by completing a company review on Glassdoor about their CEO's leadership, as well as their overall satisfaction with their job, work environment and employer over the past year. According to analysis of company and leader reviews, highly rat- ed CEOs are statistically linked to companies with great cultures. Among metrics related to company culture, the most significant driver of high CEO approval ratings is employee satisfaction with senior leadership. The study also reveals a strong link between CEO approval rating and financial performance. n
