30 Rising Stars: 62 Healthcare Leaders Under 40 By Mary Rechtoris and Eric Oliver B ecker's Healthcare is pleased to honor 62 healthcare leaders under 40 years old as rising stars in the industry. Individuals on this list have achieved executive positions at hospitals and health systems across the country, founded health IT companies and reached prominence within their organiza- tions. Many members of this list head profes- sional organizations and have been recognized for their innovative approach to patient care and health system improvement. Senior Director for Community and Government Relations at University of Massachusetts Medical School (Worcester, Mass.). In his current role, Mr. Akindele is developing the strategic relationship between UMass Medical School, the govern- ment and the greater Worcester community. He helped grow UMass' multi-departmental public health collaboration with the Worcester Division of Public Health and has experience in commu- nity relations at Hartford (Conn.) Hospital. He is a founding member of e African Council, which aims to increase civic engagement among Africans living in Massachusetts. e Worcester Business Journal named Mr. Akindele to its 40 Under 40 list in 2016. Renaisa S. Anthony, MD. Deputy Director of the Center for Reducing Health Disparities at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (Omaha). Dr. Anthony is a practicing physi- cian and public health practitioner in addition to her role as the deputy director of the Center for Reducing Health Disparities at the Univer- sity of Nebraska Medical Center. She focuses on equalizing the health disparities between patient populations, especially in depressed communities. Dr. Anthony testified before Congress in support of the ACA and received honors from former U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, MD. She is an assistant profes- sor in the department of health promotion at the University of Nebraska's College of Public Health. e National Minority Quality Forum recognized Dr. Anthony with the 40 Under 40 Leaders in Health Award for 2017. Steven Arabo, MD. Regional Medical Officer of CareMore Health Plan (Cerritos, Calif.). Dr. Arabo is an internist by training and expe- rienced patient advocate. In 2016, Dr. Arabo spoke at the National Bundled Payment Collab- orative's C-Suite Invitational about new revenue streams in value-based care. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Michael Archuleta. Director of Information Technology Services at Mt. San Rafael Hos- pital (Trinidad, Colo.). During his tenure, Mr. Archuleta designed the first data center at Mt. San Rafael Hospital while adding virtualization efforts that reduced the hospital's costs by 56 percent and improved EHR uptime from 59 percent to 99.99 percent. e American Hos- pital Association's Hospitals & Health Networks magazine awarded Mr. Archuleta and his team its 2015 and 2016 Most Wired hospital awards, which recognize hospitals that make signifi- cant technological progress. Jay Bhatt, DO. Senior Vice President and CMO of the American Hospital Association (Chicago). In addition to his roles as senior vice president and CMO of the American Hos- pital Association, Dr. Bhatt is president and CEO of the Health Research and Education- al Trust. He has a long career of accomplish- ments, including time spent as the first chief health officer of the Illinois Health and Hos- pital Association and managing deputy com- missioner and chief innovation officer for the Chicago Department of Public Health. He lead Healthy Chicago implementation, an initiative that cemented the city's public health agenda. e National Minority Quality Forum recog- nized Dr. Bhatt with the 40 Under 40 Leaders in Health Award for 2017. Vik Bakhru, MD. COO of ConsejoSano (San Francisco). Dr. Bakhru is the COO of Consejo- Sano, a venture-backed health technology plat- form for Spanish speakers. He previously served as the COO of First Opinion, a digital health startup, and CMO for Abercrombie & Kent Global Health, an international firm focused on medical travel. Dr. Bakhru serves on the board of directors for Nanubhai Education Fund and Aspire Global Health. He earned his medical degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and his masters in business administration in healthcare management from the Wharton School of the University of Penn- sylvania in Philadelphia. Anu Banerjee. Chief Quality and Innovation Officer and Senior Vice President at Arnot Health System (Elmira, N.Y.). Since Mr. Ba- nerjee took the reins as chief quality and in- novation officer nearly three years ago, Arnot Health System has reduced its fall rate by 46 percent and lowered hospital-acquired pres- sure injuries by 71 percent from 2015 to 2016. Mr. Banerjee implemented a strategy from the ground up to transition the health system into a high reliability organization to achieve the aforementioned reductions. His previous experience includes time as director of project management at Siemens Medical Solutions' workflow and solutions division. Daniel Barr. Vice President of Operations and Service Line Administrator for Hema- tology, Oncology, Bone Marrow Transplan- tation at Nationwide Children's Hospital (Columbus, Ohio). Mr. Barr was director of service line development for women's and children's services at Cleveland-based Univer- sity Hospitals Case Medical Center, Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital and MacDonald Women's Hospital before joining Nationwide Children's Hospital, where he now serves as vice president and service line administrator for hematology, oncology and bone marrow transplant. He focuses on ensuring healthcare is affordable and high quality. Nationwide Children's Hospital honored him last year with the 2016 Nationwide Children's Hospital Quality and Safety Award, and the University of Central Florida granted him the 2016 Pro- fessional Achievement Award. Bert Beard. CEO of Maria Parham Medical Center (Henderson, N.C.). Mr. Beard became CEO of the 102-bed Maria Parham Medical Center in August 2016 aer spending two years as COO of Wilson (N.C.) Medical Center. He started an $81 million hospital renovation during his time at Wilson Medical Center and played a key part in the expansion of the hospi- tal's interventional cardiology program. He has previous experience as associate administrator and assistant chief staffing officer at Hermit- age, Tenn.-based Summit Medical Center. Mr. Beard previously served almost four years as associate administrator and interim COO at Manatee Memorial Hospital in Bradenton, Fla. Daniel Brazell. CEO of La Peer Health Sys- tem (Beverly Hills, Calif.). La Peer Health System named Mr. Brazell CEO in March 2017, a pivotal time as its Beverly Hills' outpatient center expanded its physician team.
