11 62 Critical Access Hospitals to Know | 2017 By Mackenzie Bean, Laura Dyrda and Brooke Murphy B ecker's Healthcare is pleased to present the 2017 edition of the "Critical Access Hospitals to Know" list, highlighting 62 of the nation's certified critical access hospitals. Critical access hospitals have 25 or fewer inpatient beds and the annual average length of stay is 96 hours or fewer for acute care. ese hospitals also offer 24/7 emergency care and must be located at least 35 miles away from any other hospital. e hospitals featured on this list were chosen based on superior performance and reputation. Becker's Healthcare editors selected the following hospitals based on awards and rankings for respected organizations, including iVantage Health Analytics, Healthgrades, the National Rural Health Association, Women's Choice Award, Leapfrog Group and Medicare star ratings. e team also considered the hospital's community impact and reputation for innovation. Note: is is not an endorsement of included hospitals or associated healthcare providers. Organizations cannot pay for inclusion on this list. Hospitals are presented in alphabetical order. Abraham Lincoln (Ill.) Memorial Hospital. Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital was built in 2011 and has received multiple accolades for application of technology and organizational performance, including earning Hospitals & Health Networks' Most Wired recognition for four consecutive years, beginning in 2013. e nonprofit plays a central role in the community by offering a number of outreach programs, including a farmers market, fitness classes and cooking demonstrations. iVantage Health Analytics recognized ALMH as one of the nation's Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals in 2017. e hospital earned the Environmental Partner by Practice award from PracticeGreenhealth in 2017 for its environmentally friendly facility. Aspen (Colo.) Valley Hospital. Aspen Valley Hospital has served Coloradoans for over a century. e Level III trauma center became the first Colorado hospital to affiliate with the Mayo Clinic Care Network in 2013 and was named a Hospital of Choice by Custom Learning Systems based on positive patient satisfaction in 2017. e hospital has a reputation for its high clinical quality as well as its food options. e hospital cafe offers an upscale culinary experience known for drawing nonpatient crowds from the community. Aspirus Ironwood (Mich.) Hospital. Established in 1923, Aspirus Ironwood, formerly known as Aspirus Grand View, plays a central role in its community of 5,387 people. e rural hospital consists of a surgery center, two clinics, a home health program and an eye and optical center. As a steward of community-based health, Aspirus Ironwood ranks highly among its peers in clinical and financial performance as well as patient satisfaction. e National Rural Health Association named Aspirus Ironwood among the Top 20 Critical Access Hospitals in the U.S. for three consecutive years from 2015 to 2017. Aspirus Iron River (Mich.) Hospital & Clinics. Aspirus Iron River is a 25-bed hospital in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Aspirus Iron River formally joined the Aspirus family in 2014 to expand its service capabilities. e National Rural Health Association named Asprius Iron River a Top 20 Critical Access Hospital in the U.S. in 2017. Aspirus Medford (Wis.) Hospital. Aspirus Medford Hospital was the first Wisconsin hospital to receive the National Rural Health Quality Award in 2006 and has been named among iVantage Health Analytics' Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals every year since 2013. Hospitals & Health Networks recognized AMH as a Most Wired hospital in 2016. In June 2017, the hospital implemented an eICU teleservices program in partnership with Madison, Wis.-based UW Health to improve patient safety and reduce complications. Aultman Orrville (Ohio) Hospital. Aultman Orrville has belonged to the Independent Hospital Network since 1999. e network consists of five hospitals with a common mission of supporting local community healthcare. is nonprofit, 25-bed critical access hospital has served its community for more than 60 years, providing award-winning clinical service. e National Rural Health Association named Aultman Orrville Hospital a Top 20 Critical Access Hospital for quality in 2017. Avera Holy Family Hospital (Estherville, Iowa). Avera Holy Family Hospital belongs to Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Avera Health, a regional healthcare system spanning five states. e hospital participates in Avera's eCARE telemedicine program, offering patients 24/7 consultations and treatment from a range of medical specialists. e National Rural Health Association named AHFH among the nation's Top 20 Critical Access Hospitals in 2017. Barrett Hospital and HealthCare (Dillon, Mont.). Barrett Hospital and HealthCare has served a community of roughly 12,000 since 1922. iVantage Health Analytics named Barrett Hospital and HealthCare among the Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals in 2017. Barrett's latest hospital facility, completed June 2012 and licensed for 18 beds, received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold certification for its environmentally friendly healing environment.
