27 Executive Briefing Voice Capture and Annotations Voice enabled systems such as the Stryker SDC3 enable sur- geons to capture images using voice and then annotate by speaking the phrase you would like to annotate the image with. Q: How do you think having control of image capture and an- notation saves you time? RS: By the end of the case your pictures are annotated and ready to go, and that in and of itself saves me about 10 to 15 minutes between cases. AH: It makes it very easy to annotate. We don't have to go back and manually annotate anything anymore. I say "capture im- age," and then say the word itself, and after that you say "select" which will annotate the image. Postoperative Patient engagement applications for iPads Coupled with some of the new surgical video towers are iPad applications that enable surgeons to show patients and their family members their images and videos from surgery and then send them to the patient's mobile devices in a nice custom- ized pdf with their branding and instructions for postoperative care. Wes Cox, MD, and Dr. Robert Shalvoy, MD,use the Stryker MySDC3 application, and discuss what it's like to go to this new digital platform. Q: How do patients respond differently to receiving pictures and information digitally? WC: We've been taking pictures forever and giving them to them, but when you give them those pictures digitally just like you took them, the response is consistently different and better. It's consistently more positive, and the confidence that they had somebody that's up on the times and using the most modern technology provides additional confidence. RS: Patients sure seem to be more interested in the digital infor- mation than they do with just getting hard copies of information when they're leaving the hospital. With my Stryker app, I'm able to communicate and share what's going on with my patient in ways that I have never been able to do before. I'm able to [digitally] share instructions; I'm able to share photographs from the surgery with detailed descriptions that will give them the key understanding that will make them more satisfied. The days of just giving them a sheet of images are gone compared to what I can do with my Stryker app. Q: How do you feel the app helps with the time you spend edu- cating patients? WC: Since we started using the app we don't have near as many of the sort of redundant conversations "now what did you do again, I mean I know we got the pictures but can you describe it to me?" That used to be a very common thing, and we don't really have it anymore. So the uptake is huge for them. Their understanding of what we did is profoundly greater. Q: How has the app impacted your overall experience with your video system? WC: The overall experience with the app has been awesome; it's just easy and I think the patient experience is better. I like it because I am able to give them a better experience without taking any additional time to do it. It's a no-brainer. n "With my Stryker app, I'm able to communicate and share what's going on with my patient in ways that I have never been able to do before." — Dr. Robert Shalvoy Stryker is one of the world's leading medical technology companies offering a diverse array of innovative products and services in Orthopaedics, Medical and Surgical, and Neurotechnology and Spine that help improve patient and hospital outcomes.
