24 24 CEO/STRATEGY Truven Names 15 Top Health Systems for 2017 By Ayla Ellison T ruven Health Analytics, a healthcare data and analytics solutions provider, released its ninth annual list of the na- tion's 15 top health systems. To identify the top 15 health systems, Truven analyzed data from 337 health systems based on the following five performance domains: inpatient outcomes, process of care, extended outcomes, efficiency and patient experience. When compared to their peers, this year's top 15 health systems achieved higher sur- vival rates, released patients from the hospi- tal sooner, had fewer readmissions, shorter emergency department wait times and higher patient satisfaction scores, according to Tru- ven Health. Here are the Truven Health 15 Top Health Systems, organized by system size. Large health systems (total operating ex- pense of more than $1.75 billion) Mayo Foundation (Rochester, Minn.) Roper St. Francis Healthcare (Charleston, S.C.) e 15 Top Health Systems study is part of Truven's 100 Top Hospitals program. n HCA to Change Its Name — Again By Ayla Ellison N ashville, Tenn.-based HCA Holdings board of directors voted to rework the company's name, CEO Milton Johnson said on a May 2 earnings call. The company's new name is HCA Healthcare as of May 8. Regarding the change, Mr. Johnson said, "Our new name is more reflective of our mission and the broad spectrum of care we provide to our communities and the dedication of our caregivers to our patients in our vast network of inpatient and outpatient facilities across our 42 U.S. markets and the U.K." The company will continue to trade under the ticker symbol HCA after the change takes ef- fect. HCA has reworked its name several times over the years. Prior to HCA Holdings, the compa- ny's names included HCA Inc., Hospital Corpo- ration of America and Columbia/HCA Health- care. n Cleveland Clinic President and CEO Dr. Toby Cosgrove to Step Down in 2017 By Alyssa Rege T oby Cosgrove, MD, president and CEO of Cleveland Clinic, re- vealed plans to transition out of his executive roles later this year. He will reportedly continue on in an advisory role to the Cleve- land Clinic. Dr. Cosgrove served as president and CEO of the system for roughly 13 years. The Clinic's board of directors and board of governors plan to jointly select Dr. Cosgrove's successor by the end of 2017. Officials will search for another practicing physician to lead the organization. Under his leadership, the Cleveland Clinic launched a number of major wellness initiatives for patients, employees and communities, including a same-day medical appointment policy, the cessation of smoking on all Cleveland Clinic campuses, weekly farmer's markets at the Clinic in the fall and winter months and free memberships to Weight Watchers and various exercise facilities for all employees, among other programs. Prior to his executive roles with the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Cosgrove prac- ticed as a cardiac surgeon for nearly 30 years. "It is an honor and a privilege to be a part of an extraordinary and for- ward-thinking organization that puts patients at the center of everything we do," Dr. Cosgrove said in a statement. "Cleveland Clinic's world-class reputation of clinical excellence, innovation, medical education and re- search was created and will be maintained by the truly dedicated care- givers who work tirelessly to provide the best care to our patients." n
