5 Healthcare Technology Trends Taking Center Stage in 2017
By Megan Wood
S
an Mateo, Calif.-based PokitDok predicted technology
trends that will impact the healthcare industry in 2017.
"These trends reflect what our stakeholders are buy-
ing, using, valuing and telling us — it is clear that consumer-
driven, not institution-driven healthcare, is here," said Lisa
Maki, co-founder and CEO, PokitDok.
Here are five key technology trends PokitDok believes will
drive healthcare in 2017:
1. Healthcare will transition from theory to practice in the
Blockchain world. The new year will see academic and theo-
retical discussions move forward into pilots and applications.
2. Healthcare e-commerce will witness a boost in 2017,
with more major health systems collaborating with technol-
ogy companies for infrastructure with built-in cybersecurity
and HIPAA compliance.
3. Telehealth will no longer be on the outskirts, pushed into
the mainstream with expanded reimbursement policies, us-
age and outreach programs.
4. Ms. Maki doesn't feel President Donald Trump will fulfill
his promise to completely repeal the ACA, despite a Re-
publican Party-dominant Congress and Tom Price, MD, (R-
Ga.) leading the HHS.
5. Auto-adjudication will drive providers to interact with
EHR, revenue cycle management and practice manage-
ment vendors. "These vendors will ultimately serve as nodes
on the blockchain, and through smart contracts, common
business rules and processes will be implicitly encoded on
the chain," according to the press release.

Patient Shot After Opening
Fire in Houston Hospital
By Ayla Ellison
A
n off-duty sheriff's deputy working security at
North Cypress Medical Center in Houston shot
a patient who opened fire inside the hospital on
the morning of Jan. 3, 2017.
The 21-year-old man, whose name has not been re-
leased, arrived at North Cypress Medical Center's
emergency room at 8:05 a.m. on Jan. 3, and told
hospital staff he needed an X-ray, according to a
press release from the hospital.
The patient was examined by a triage nurse and then
again by an ER physician. The patient reportedly be-
came angry and left the examination room when the
physician and nurse asked him to disrobe.
According to hospital officials, the patient ran to the am-
bulance bay in the ER, pulled a gun out of his waistband
and fired a shot. He then ran through the ER with the
gun in his hand and exited the building. He was shot just
outside the ER entrance by an off-duty sheriff's deputy
working security. Sheriff's deputies told KHOU news the
man was still combative after being shot.
North Cypress Medical Center officials said the man is
being treated for his injuries at the hospital and is in
stable condition.
