He also created then-83-bed acute care hospital Desert Valley Hospital in Vic- torville, Calif., in 1994, which Prime eventually acquired. Under his leadership, Prime Healthcare has been recognized by various ranking institutions — such as Truven Health Analytics and e Joint Commis- sion — for high quality. He has also established two nonprofit charita- ble foundations: the Dr. Prem Reddy Family Foundation and the Prime Healthcare Foundation. Dr. Reddy, a double board-certified internist and cardiologist, practiced medicine for 25 years and performed more than 5,000 cardiac procedures. David Reich, MD. President and COO of e Mount Sinai Hospital and President of Mount Sinai Queens (New York City). Dr. Reich be- came president and COO of e Mount Sinai Hospital and president of Mount Sinai Queens, both of which are part of the Mount Sinai Health System, in 2013. Dr. Reich, who also serves as the Horace W. Goldsmith Professor of Anesthesiology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, was chair of the department of anesthesiology at e Mount Sinai Hospital from July 2004 to March 2014. Dr. Reich began his career at the health system with a residency in anesthesia in 1984, followed by a fellowship in cardiothoracic anesthesia. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, invited articles, editorials and book chapters. Dr. Reich is also an editor of several texts, including Cardiac Anesthe- sia, Monitoring in Anesthesia and Perioperative Care and Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography. Sheldon M. Retchin, MD. Executive Vice President of Health Sciences at the Ohio State University and CEO of OSU Wexner Medical Cen- ter (Columbus). Dr. Retchin, a board-certified internist, stepped into his current role as executive vice president of health sciences at OSU and CEO of the Wexner Medical Center in March 2015. Previously, he served as senior vice president for health sciences at Virginia Common- wealth University and CEO of the VCU Health System in Richmond. Dr. Retchin was recently appointed to the Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission by the U.S. comptroller general. A recognized expert in health policy and healthcare delivery, he has authored more than 90 articles, chapters and books on the costs, quality and outcomes of care. Robert C. Robbins, MD. President and CEO of Texas Medical Center (Houston). Dr. Robbins, a cardiac surgeon, became president and CEO of Texas Medical Center in 2012. In addition to his current role, he sits on the advisory board of the Ronald McDonald House Houston and on the board of directors of several Houston organizations. Previously, he served as professor and chairman of the department of cardiothoracic surgery at Stanford (Calif.) University School of Medicine and director of the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute. During his career, he has been president of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplanta- tion, president of the Bay Area Society of oracic Surgeons and chair of the American Heart Association Cardiovascular Surgery and Anesthesia Council, among other roles. Dr. Robbins is the author of more than 292 peer-reviewed articles. Cliff Robertson, MD. CEO of CHI Health and Senior Vice President of Divisional Operations of CHI (Englewood, Colo.). Before stepping into his current role, Dr. Robertson served CHI as interim CEO of St. Luke's Medical Center in Houston and as COO of Franciscan Health System in Tacoma, Wash. Previously, he was senior vice president of physician devel- opment and president and CMO of Franciscan Medical Group, a role he served in for 10 years. Dr. Robertson, a family practice physician, earned his medical degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus and completed his residency and internship in family practice at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Wash. Joseph Robertson Jr., MD. President of Oregon Health and Science University (Portland). In addition to serving as president of OHSU since 2006, Dr. Robertson is a board-certified ophthalmologist with a clinical focus on vitreous surgery and special emphasis on surgery for macular diseases. Dr. Robertson previously served as dean of the OHSU School of Medicine, director of the Casey Eye Institute and chair of the department of ophthalmology. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of the American Medical Association. Paul Rothman, MD. CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine (Baltimore). Not only does Dr. Rothman, a molecular immunologist, serve as CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine, but he also is the dean of the medical faculty and vice president for medicine at Johns Hopkins University. His pre- vious roles include head of internal medicine and leader of the critical practice plan at Iowa City, Iowa-based Carver College of Medicine. He was also chief of the pulmonary, allergy and critical care division at New York City-based Columbia University. From 2014 to 2015, Dr. Rothman served as president of the Association of American Physicians. Kenneth N. Sable, MD. President of Jersey Shore University Medical Center (Neptune, N.J.). In January 2015, Dr. Sable returned to the hos- pital where he did rotations as a medical student — Jersey Shore Univer- sity Medical Center. But this time, he came in as president of the 643- bed independent academic medical center, as well as the K. Hovnanian Children's Hospital, both of which are part of Neptune, N.J.-based Me- ridian Health. Dr. Sable has also served as executive vice president and COO of New Brunswick, N.J.-based Saint Peter's Healthcare System and vice chairman for operations in the emergency department at Brooklyn, N.Y.-based Maimonides Medical Center. Steven M. Safyer, MD. President and CEO of Montefiore Medical Center (New York City). Since joining Montefiore in 1982, Dr. Safyer progressed through the ranks, becoming senior vice president and CMO in 1998 and president and CEO in 2008. Dr. Safyer has strengthened the relationship between Montefiore and Bronx, N.Y.-based Albert Ein- stein College of Medicine, which resulted in the creation of Montefiore Medicine in 2015. Dr. Safyer, who is board-certified in internal med- icine, is a professor of medicine and a professor of epidemiology and population health at Einstein College of Medicine. In addition, he is a founding member of the Health Management Academy, in which exec- utive members from the largest integrated health systems in the U.S. and innovative companies share best practices and benchmark information to support quality and efficiency improvement efforts. Ihor Sawczuk, MD. President of Hackensack (N.J.) University Medi- cal Center. In 2001, Dr. Sawczuk began his tenure at Hackensack Uni- versity Medical Center as chairman of the department of urology. Since then, he has held positions of increasing rank, such as chief academic officer, CMO and executive vice president. In January, Dr. Sawczuk was named president of Hackensack University Medical Center, effective in April. He also recently received the first academic appointment as pro- fessor of surgery at Hackensack Meridian Health's forthcoming medical school with Seton Hall University. John Jay Shannon, MD. CEO of Cook County Health & Hospitals Sys- tem (Chicago). Dr. Shannon's experience in Chicago has spanned de- cades. In 1990, he joined the medical staff of John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he served as director of the Adult Asthma Clinic, associate chair of the department of medicine and chief of the divisions of pulmonary and critical care medicine. He then moved to Dallas, where he served as executive vice president and CMO of Parkland Health & Hos- pital System from 2007 to 2012. However, he returned to Chicago in 2013 when he became chief of clinical integration at Cook County Health & Hospitals System.
