All recipients have demonstrated outstanding leadership and clinical expertise throughout their careers, leading initia- tives to improve their individual organizations and the healthcare of the communities they serve. e Becker's Hospital Review editorial team considered nominations and conducted research to select leaders for this list. Leaders are presented in alphabetical order. Richard Afable, MD. President and CEO of St. Joseph Hoag Health (Newport Beach, Calif.). Dr. Afable serves as president and CEO of St. Joseph Hoag Health, an integrated delivery system in Orange County, Calif., that includes seven hospitals, numerous ambulatory sites and an expansive physician network. In addition, Dr. Afable serves as executive vice president and regional senior executive of Providence St. Joseph Health, Southern California, and interim CEO of Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, Calif. Prior to the creation of St. Joseph Hoag Health, Dr. Afable was president and CEO of Newport Beach-based Hoag Memorial Presbyterian, a two-hospital system with 5,000 employees. He spent 10 years in private practice as a board-certified internist and geriatrician and he was executive vice president and CMO of Newtown Square, Pa.- based Catholic Health East. He also founded Preferred Physician Part- ners, a Cincinnati-based physician practice management company. Steve Allen, MD. CEO of Nationwide Children's Hospital (Columbus, Ohio). Serving as CEO of Nationwide Children's Hospital since 2006, Dr. Allen oversees more than 1,100 medical staff members and a hospital staff of 8,000, as well as the hospital's Research Institute, Hospital Foundation and e Center for Family Safety and Healing. He also serves on the board of the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions and is a member of Child Health Corporation of America. Prior to taking the helm at Nationwide Children's, he served as CMO of Memorial Her- mann Hospital and Memorial Hermann Children's Hospital in Houston. Dr. Allen was formerly a professor in the department of anesthesiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston and now teaches in the anesthesiology department at e Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus. He is board-certified in anesthesiology and critical care medicine and has published almost 100 articles and more than 20 book chapters on a variety of medical topics. Imran Andrabi, MD. CEO of Mercy Health-Toledo (Ohio). In addi- tion to his role as CEO of Mercy Health-Toledo, Dr. Andrabi serves as senior vice president of Cincinnati-based Mercy Health. He also acts as chairman of the board for Mercy Health Physicians, which represents more than 1,300 providers across Ohio and Kentucky. Dr. Andrabi pre- viously served as president, CEO and chief network integration officer at Mercy Health-Toledo. Formerly, he acted as COO for St. Charles Hospi- tal and CEO for St. Vincent Medical Center, both in Toledo. Dr. Andrabi is a fellow of the National Institute for Program Director Development, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Association of Inter- national Physicians of Northwestern Ohio and the Academy of Medi- cine of Toledo & Lucas County. Timothy Babineau, MD. President and CEO of Lifespan (Provi- dence, R.I.). Prior to serving as president and CEO of Lifespan, Dr. Babineau was president and CEO of Rhode Island Hospital and e Miriam Hospital, both based in Providence. He previously acted as senior vice president and CMO of the University of Maryland Med- ical Center and School of Medicine in Baltimore. Dr. Babineau is a board-certified general surgeon who's held professorships in surgery at Baltimore-based University of Maryland, Boston University School of Medicine and Boston-based Harvard Medical School. He received the America's Top Surgeons Award from Consumer Reports and the Consumers Research Council. Dr. Babineau also edits the Journal of Surgical Innovation and Research. David J. Bailey, MD. President and CEO of Nemours (Jacksonville, Fla.). Dr. Bailey has been president and CEO of Nemours, an integrated children's health system, since 2006. In this role, he oversees two free- standing hospitals in Delaware and Florida. Nemours also includes more than 60 primary, specialty and urgent care practices in five states and has 20 affiliated hospital relationships. Dr. Bailey also operates KidsHealth, a website for children's healthcare information. He started his career at Nemours Children's Clinic in Orlando, Fla., and became the system's first COO in 2003. He has also served various roles in the Medical Army Corps and established the division of pediatric gastroenterology at the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando. Patrick Battey, MD. CEO of Piedmont Atlanta Hospital. Dr. Battey — who has been on staff with Piedmont Atlanta since 1985 — took the reins as CEO of Piedmont Atlanta Hospital in January, making him the first physician CEO the hospital has had since its 1905 opening. Prior to his ap- pointment as sole CEO, he served for a year as Piedmont Atlanta Hospital co-CEO with Les Donahue. Dr. Battey has previous experience as interim CEO of Atlanta-based Piedmont Healthcare. He is a vascular surgeon with Piedmont Heart Institute and a fellow with the American College of Sur- geons, Society for Vascular Surgery and Atlanta Vascular Society. Amy Beiter, MD. President and CEO of Carondelet St. Mary's Hospi- tal (Tucson, Ariz.). Dr. Beiter joined Carondelet St. Mary's staff in 1992, working as a clinician and medical director for utilization management as well as CMO before becoming president and CEO in 2012. Dr. Beiter is board-certified in internal medicine and pediatrics and serves as the president of the Carondelet Heart & Vascular Institute. She is a member of the Society of Hospital Medicine and the American College of Physi- cian Executives and a fellow of the American College of Physicians. She sits on the board of the Employers Health Alliance of Arizona and the Pima County Access Program. Edward J. Benz Jr., MD. President and CEO of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (Boston). Dr. Benz has served as president and CEO of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute since 2000. He acts as CEO of Da- na-Farber/Partners CancerCare and director of Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center and is a trustee of Dana-Farber/Children's Hospital Cancer Care. Dr. Benz is also the Richard and Susan Smith Professor of Medicine and faculty dean for oncology at Boston-based Harvard Medical School. Prior to his role as president and CEO of the institute, he served as a professor and chairman of the department of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. Dr. Benz has authored more than 200 articles, books, chapters, reviews and abstracts and acts as an associate editor for the New England Jour- nal of Medicine.
