CARE
DELIVERY
What's one piece of advice you remember most clearly?
Tell the truth. If you tell the truth you don't have to remember who
told you what. I think that's critically important in our industry.
You have to shine a bright light on both the challenges and the
opportunities we have. A lot of leaders aren't necessarily willing to
shine a bright light on their weaknesses, but I find that by telling
the truth about the current state, people find that very refreshing
and it allows us to get on with meeting the challenges and oppor-
tunities presented to us.
What do you consider your greatest achievement at Vir-
ginia Mason Medical Center so far?
I think it's been about transforming our culture. Over the past 20 years,
we've been creating a culture truly designed around our patients with
a relentless pursuit of quality and safety. is culture is founded on the
belief that teamwork and integration is the better way to deliver care.
Courageously, our team has brought a new management system from
outside healthcare into the organization. We are in our 15th year of ap-
plying the Toyota Production System to healthcare. It is quite profound
and exciting to see what's possible when we're willing to break out of
our comfort zone. n
With Stryker, now you can have a say in
what the future holds when it comes to reform.
Let's fill in the blanks together.
