10 THE LIST ISSUE 50 Critical Access Hospitals to Know | 2016 B ecker's Healthcare is pleased to high- light the following subset of 50 critical access hospitals to know. Critical access hospitals are fairly unique as acute care hospitals go. ey must have no more than 25 inpatient beds, have an annual average length of stay of no more than 96 hours for acute care, offer 24/7 emergency care and be located at least 35 miles from another hospital, according to HHS. e following 50 meet all of those require- ments while going above and beyond to care for their patients. To develop this list, the Becker's team conducted research and exam- ined several reputable hospital ranking sourc- es relevant to critical access hospitals, such as iVantage Health Analytics, the National Rural Health Association, Healthgrades and CMS' Hospital Compare, among other sources, including prior lists from this publication. Note: is list is not an endorsement of included hospitals or associated healthcare providers, and organizations cannot pay for inclusion on this list. Hospitals are presented in alphabetical order. Abraham Lincoln (Ill.) Memorial Hospital. Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital is an affili- ate of Springfield, Ill.-based Memorial Health System. As a nonprofit institution, ALMH par- ticipates in a wide array of community outreach programs, including free blood pressure screen- ings and diabetes support groups in addition to various other wellness programs and events. ALMH provided $6.9 million in community benefit to local citizens in fiscal year 2015. It was recognized as a Most Wired hospital by Hospitals & Health Networks this year. Aspen (Colo.) Valley Hospital. Founded in 1889 to care for men employed in the mining industry, Aspen Valley Hospital became the first Colorado hospital to affiliate with the Mayo Clinic Care Network in 2013. AVH is one of four Colorado hospitals to receive a five-star rating from CMS and it earned recognition as a Top 20 Critical Access Hos- pital in Financial Stability from the National Rural Health Association in 2015. At the 2016 HealthCare Service Excellence Conference, AVH garnered 18 awards, including eight Breakthrough Awards for improvements in overall patient satisfaction as well as the Sum- mit Award for being a "hospital of choice." Healthgrades awarded AVH its Outstanding Patient Experience Award in 2016. Aspirus Grand View Hospital (Ironwood, Mich.). Founded in 1932, Aspirus Grand View Hospital serves the medical needs of those in up- per Michigan and northern Wisconsin. AGVH consists of the Aspirus Grand View Surgical Center, two clinics, a home health program and an eye and optical center. Nationally, the hospital ranks highly among its peers. is year, Aspirus Grand View was named among the Top 20 Criti- cal Access Hospitals in the nation by the National Rural Health Association for the second year in a row. It was also named a Top 100 Critical Access Hospital by iVantage Health Analytics. Aspirus Medford (Wis.) Hospital. Aspirus Medford Hospital, part of the Wausau, Wis.- based Aspirus Network, has served the Taylor County community since its humble begin- nings in 1920. In collaboration and partnership with the Taylor County Health Department and other health agencies, Aspirus Medford assisted in the development of a five-year community health plan for Taylor County residents. In 2016, Aspirus Medford was named among the Top 20 Critical Access Hospitals in the nation by the National Rural Health Association. It also received Healthgrades' 2016 Outstanding Patient Experience Award. Avera Holy Family Hospital (Estherville, Iowa). Avera Holy Family Hospital is part of Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Avera Health, a regional healthcare system that spans five states. As a critical access hospital, Avera Holy Family em- phasizes community benefit initiatives to drive health and wellness among its regional popu- lace. According to the most recent HCAHPS results, more than 92 percent of patients at Avera Holy Family Hospital reported that their physician "always" communicated well during episodes of care. Avera Holy Family was named a Top 100 Critical Access Hospital in the nation by iVantage Health Analytics this year. Barrett Hospital and HealthCare (Dillon, Mont.). Since its founding in 1922, Barrett Hospital and HealthCare has grown into a modern, rural healthcare organization capable of providing care to 12,000 patients a year. Barrett's latest facility, completed in June 2012, received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold certification for its environmentally friendly healing setting. Barrett has consistently been ranked among the nation's Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals by iVantage Health Analytics, and it was named one of the Top 20 Critical Access Hospitals in the nation by the National Rural Health Association in 2015. Boone County Health Center (Albion, Neb.). Boone County Health Center is a nationally recognized leader, providing healthcare excel- lence to central Nebraska residents for more than 60 years. e hospital offers patients 25 private suites, five nursery layettes and two family-oriented obstetrical suites. BCHC has been consistently recognized among the nation's top critical access hospitals due to its focus on quality patient care. is year, it was named a Healthgrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award winner and a Top 100 Critical Access Hospital by iVantage Health Analytics for the fourth year in a row. Bridgton (Maine) Hospital. Bridgton Hospi- tal is a member of the Central Maine Medical Family, an integrated healthcare delivery or- ganization that serves the central and western state. To ensure their clinical standards con- tinue to meet or exceed industry benchmarks, Bridgton Hospital and the Bridgton Hospital Physicians' Group participate in state and na- tional database studies and surveys to measure quality delivery. In 2016, the National Rural Health Association named Bridgton Hospital among the Top 20 Critical Access Hospitals in the nation for quality performance. Calumet Medical Center (Chilton, Wis.). In 1956 Calumet County opened Calumet Memo- rial Hospital, since renamed Calumet Medical Center. Calumet Medical joined Appleton, Wis.-based Trinity Health System in 1996 to enhance patient access to the system's extensive medical expertise and resources. at same year, the medical center launched the Calumet Area Community Health Foundation to pro- mote public wellness and health education in the region. roughout recent years, Calumet has boasted a number of national awards for its accomplishments — for instance, it was named a Top 20 Critical Access Hospital by the National Rural Health Association in 2016. Central Montana Medical Center (Lew- istown). Nestled on top of a hill with a view of five mountain ranges, Central Montana Med- ical Center is a 25-bed critical access hospital that provides a full range of healthcare services.
