5 PATIENT SAFETY LEADERS 50 Experts Leading the Field of Patient Safety | 2016 By Max Green and Brian Zimmerman B ecker's Healthcare is pleased to release the 2016 edition of its list of "50 Experts Leading the Field of Patient Safety." is year's list features clinicians, advocates and legislators who have contributed to improving patient safety in different ways — some lead influential government agencies or organizations fo- cused on the issue, some edit prominent journals or write extensively on the topic, and others champion successful safety initiatives at their hospitals or health systems. Becker's Healthcare selected experts based on editorial research and discretion. Nominations were also considered when making selec- tions for this list. Note: Leaders are presented in alphabetical order and could not pay for inclusion. David W. Baker, MD. Inaugural Editor-in-Chief of e Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety. In addition to his editor-in-chief role, Dr. Baker is the executive vice president for the Division of Healthcare Quality Evaluation at the Joint Com- mission, where he monitors the development of healthcare quality evaluation tools. Dr. Baker has published upward of 200 original research articles and has been the recipient of numerous honors, in- cluding the 2013 American College of Physicians' Alvan R. Feinstein Memorial Award for research in clinical epidemiology. Dr. Baker has devoted much of his research to the examination of racial healthcare disparities and the adverse influence of language barriers on care quality. He helped develop the Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults and has published extensively on the importance of health literacy. David J. Ballard, MD, PhD. Chief Quality Officer for Baylor Scott & White Health (Dallas) and President of the STEEEP Global Institute. Aer completing degrees in chemistry, economics, epide- miology and medicine at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, Dr. Ballard trained at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. In his role as CQO of the largest healthcare system in Texas, Dr. Ballard implements and evaluates clinical quality improvement ini- tiatives across the system. e system achieves its care objectives by adhering to the STEEEP philosophy. e six domains of STEEEP are safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable and patient-centered. Dr. Ballard's books, "Achieving STEEEP Health Care" and "e Guide to Achieving STEEEP Health Care," both were honored with the Shingo Research Award for their contributions to operational excellence. Carol Barsky, MD. Vice President, Chief Quality and Patient Safety Officer of Hackensack (N.J.) University Health Network. Dr. Barsky took on her current role in July 2015, joining HackensackUHN from Yale-New Haven (Conn.) Hospital, where she was medical director for clinical performance and associate chief of patient safety and quality. She trained in emergency medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, and earned an MBA from Yale School of Man- agement. Dr. Barsky has also served as vice chair and medical director at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. ere, she coordinated the hospital's response to 9/11. She also redesigned the hospital's emer- gency department, overseeing the instillation of New York City's first completely electronic medical record. David Westfall Bates, MD. Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Patient Safety. Dr. Bates is not only the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Patient Safety, he is also the chief innovation officer of Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital, where he uses fresh ideas to create healthcare improvements that benefit patients and care delivery. Dr. Bates' work has been essential to the field of patient safety, both highlighting the importance of the issue and providing a path toward solutions. He has published work examining medication errors and the use of information systems to improve medication safety. Dr. Bates has been the recipient of many awards including the first John M. Eisenberg Award for Patient Safety Research from the Joint Com- mission and the National Quality Forum in 2002. Don Berwick, MD. President Emeritus and Senior Fellow of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. Dr. Berwick is a former administrator of CMS and chair of the National Advisory Council of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Dr. Berwick has a background in pediatrics and has served the IHI since 1991, where he has overseen the cultivation and implementation of innovative ideas and programs brought to fruition for the purpose of improving patient care. Dr. Berwick has authored and co-authored more than 160 medical articles and five books. He is a lecturer in the Depart- ment of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School in Boston. Dr. Berwick was knighted in 2005 by the queen of England in recog- nition for his work with the British National Health Service. Leah Binder. CEO of Leapfrog Group. Ms. Binder has been the CEO of the Leapfrog Group since 2008. Leapfrog is a national non- profit dedicated to the improvement of healthcare quality, affordabil- ity and patient safety in hospitals. Ms. Binder frequently speaks and writes about patient safety. She is a regular contributor to both Forbes and the Huffington Post. Ms. Binder has served on many national boards and councils including the National Priorities Partnership board, the PCORI Health Systems advisory panel and the Institute of Medicine Collaboration on Patient Engagement.
