In 2009, CHI St. Vincent Infirmary became the first hospital in the nation to partner with Wal-Mart to offer consumers in-store walk-in clinics for basic services like check-ups and immunizations, solidifying its reputation as an early adopter of retail health services. Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Children' Hospital Los Angeles, a nonprofit teaching hospital affiliated with University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine, provides more than 107,000 children with high-quali- ty pediatric care every year. e hospital was founded in 1901 by the King's Daughters, one of the first female philanthropic organizations in Los Angeles. Operations started small in a house that admitted 14 patients in its first year. Today, Children's Hospital Los Angeles rests on an urban campus and houses medical experts for more than 350 pediatric specialty programs and services. For 2015-16, U.S. News & World Report ranked Children's Hospital Los Angeles on its Honor Roll of the best children's hospi- tals. e Magnet-designated hospital also has the unique distinction of being a 2015 Leapfrog Top Children's Hospital. e Emergency Nurses Association awarded the hospital's emergency department with its 2013-16 Lantern Award for exceptional practice and innovative perfor- mance in nursing leadership, practice, educa- tion advocacy and research. e hospital is also home to the Saban Re- search Institute, one of the largest and most productive pediatric research centers in the western U.S. that houses more than 200 active clinical trials each year. e Saban Research Institute building and Smith Research Tower provide more than 450 scientific researchers with 150,000 square feet of bench laboratory space. e institute is home to four national re- search consortiums in childhood cancer. Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Chil- dren's Hospital of Philadelphia got its start in 1855 as the nation's first hospital solely devoted to the care of children. What began as a 12-bed operation that served 67 inpatients and 306 clinic patients in its first year has grown into a 527-bed hospital that handles more than 1 mil- lion inpatient admissions and outpatient visits annually. e hospital is also home to a prolific pediatric research facility and one of the largest pediatric healthcare networks in the country, including upwards of 50 pediatrician offices, specialty care centers and surgical centers. U.S. News & World Report ranked CHOP No. 2 on its 2015-16 Honor Roll of children's hos- pitals. CHOP has also been recognized for ex- cellence in nursing with a Magnet designation. e hospital emphasizes family involvement in care by encouraging parents to actively par- ticipate in the decision-making process and providing support services such as chaplaincy, family consultants and support groups. Accompanying its status as the nation's first children's hospital, CHOP boasts a myriad of other firsts that solidify the institution as a trailblazer in pediatric medicine. Notable firsts include the first medical training for pediatric physicians, the first neonatal surgical and pedi- atric intensive care unit in the nation and the first follow-up program for long-term survi- vors of childhood cancer. CHOP also provided its patients with the first vaccines for mumps, whooping cough, influenza and rotavirus. Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. is nonprofit children's hospital is now licensed for 315 beds, but it got its start in 1890 as a single cot in a local hospital ded- icated to the care of children and infants. In its own facility now on a 10-acre campus, the hospital building has nine floors, 13 operat- ing suites and a 20,000-square-foot family resource and activity center, which houses a chapel, libraries, a healing garden and a busi- ness center for parents. As the only hospital in southwestern Pennsyl- vania solely dedicated to the care of infants, children and young adults, clinicians at Chil- dren's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC per- formed 35,534 surgical procedures, and its emergency room hosted nearly 80,000 visits in fiscal year 2015. Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC was recognized among the nation's Top 20 Most Beautiful Hospitals in 2015 by Soliant Health. Not only is the hospital visually pleas- ing, it is also designed to be one of the quietest hospitals in the nation: More than 30 different design measures, including sound-deadened elevator cab enclosures, extensive use of door seals, reduction of overhead paging and "so" wheels on mobile carts, were incorporated into the facility's design. e children's hospital is also well-known for quality of care: It was ranked nationally in 10 pediatric specialties by U.S. News & World Re- port in 2015-16, earning it a spot as the No. 8 children's hospital in the nation. Additionally, the Leapfrog Group named Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC as one of its 2015 Top Children's Hospitals. Children's National Medical Center (Wash- ington, D.C.). Founded in 1870, Children's Na- tional Medical Center has provided healthcare to children for more than 140 years in the na- tion's capital. is 313-bed institution — which includes more than 60 intensive care beds and the only pediatric neuro-intensive care and car- diac intensive care units in the region — is one of the nation's first children's hospitals and the only freestanding children's hospital between Philadelphia and Atlanta. Clinicians treat more than 300,000 patients every year, and the hospi- tal provides upwards of $45 million in uncom- pensated care annually. Children's National has been recognized for ex- cellence in nursing with a Magnet designation. e hospital was ranked in 10 pediatric special- ties by U.S. News & World Report for 2015-16, se- curing its status as the No. 10 children's hospital in the nation. Located just north of downtown in the historic Cin- cinnati neighborhood of Mount Auburn, e Christ Hospital has long been a beacon of the community. In 1888, a group of Cincinna- ti locals led by James Gamble — whose soap business eventually developed into Procter & Gamble — invited Isabella oburn, a teach- er, nurse and missionary, to move to Cincin- nati. e group asked her to start an initiative to train deaconesses and missionaries to con- duct religious, educational and philanthropic work with hopes of alleviating the poverty that plagued the city. In 1889, she opened a 10-bed hospital named Christ's Hospital in the West End, and it was relocated to Mount Auburn in 1893. e hospital opened a nursing school in 1902 and the facility rebranded as e Christ Hospital in 1904. e 555-bed hospital sits on one of the highest points in the county, offering patients and vis- itors a panoramic view of the Cincinnati ba- sin. U.S. News & World Report recognized e Christ Hospital as the No. 4 hospital in Ohio in its 2015-16 rankings.
