Rush University Medical Center is a nonprofit, 664-bed academic medical center with a med- ical staff that numbers more than 800. e or- ganization is named aer Benjamin Rush, MD, the only physician with medical school train- ing to sign the Declaration of Independence. Rush UMC has seen many historic medical discoveries in its long history, including the discovery of the cause of heart attacks in 1912 and the development of the scarlet fever vac- cine in the early 1920s. Rush UMC's proverbial trophy case is impres- sive. e facility was ranked among the top 50 hospitals in the nation in seven adult special- ties, No. 2 in the Chicago metro area and No. 2 in the state of Illinois by U.S. News & World Report in its 2015-16 rankings. In 2016, Rush UMC was named to Truven Health Analytics' 100 Top Hospital list for the second consecu- tive year and the winner of two Healthgrades awards: the 100 Best Hospitals for Coronary Intervention Award and the Joint Replacement Excellence Award. e hospital is accredited by e Joint Com- mission and was re-recognized by the Ameri- can Nurses Credentialing Center this year as a Magnet organization. Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center (Los Angeles). Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Cen- ter is comprised of the UCLA Medical Cen- ter-Santa Monica, Stewart and Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA and Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA. In total, the West Los Angeles campus spans four acres. Each year, the medical center provides care to more than 380,000 people from Los Angeles and around the world. RRUCLA employs 1,500 full-time physicians and more than 2,500 support staff. e medical center, originally named UCLA Medical Center, was founded in 1955, but be- came RRUCLA in 2008 when its new hospital structure opened. e facility was one of the first total replacement hospitals built to meet Cal- ifornia's latest seismic safety standards, in case of an earthquake. Every floor of the hospital is dedicated to a particular specialty. Each floor is equipped with all of the necessary support technology and supplies and has its own satellite pharmacy, dialysis storage, respiratory therapy workrooms and resident physician sleep rooms. Additionally, every patient room has the capaci- ty to convert into an intensive care unit. In 2015-16 U.S. News & World Report ranked UCLA Medical Center as tied for the No. 3 hospital in the nation, ranking it nationally in 15 adult specialties and nine pediatric special- ties. In 2016, Healthgrades gave RRUCLA the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Ex- cellence and the 100 Best Hospitals for Stroke Care Award for the second consecutive year. Sanford USD Medical Center (Sioux Falls, S.D.). Founded in 1894, Sanford USD Medical Center has grown to become the largest hospital in South Dakota. It has 4,000 employees and is the teaching hospital for the Sanford School of Medicine at the University of South Dakota. Magnet-designated Sanford USD Medical Center offers comprehensive clinical services and a number of specialty centers, including cancer, sports medicine and women's health. Part of Sanford Health, an integrated health system with 43 hospitals, Sanford USD Medi- cal Center is involved in many of the system's more than 150 open clinical trials. In 2015-16, U.S. News & World Report ranked 545-bed Sanford USD Medical Center the No. 1 hospital in South Dakota. e publication also ranked the hospital among the top 30 in the country for gastroenterology and GI surgery and among the top 50 for urology. Healthgrades gave the hospital its Distinguished Hospital Award of Clinical Excellence this year as well. Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla (Calif.). Established in 1924 by philanthropist and journalist Ellen Browning Scripps, Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla offers a wide range of clinical, specialty and surgical services. e 318-bed hospital has more than 2,180 employ- ees and more than 950 affiliated physicians. Each year, Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jol- la handles roughly 125,000 patient visits and 30,550 emergency room visits. Annually, its clinicians perform more than 6,000 open-heart surgeries and deliver 3,900 babies. Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla was named a Truven Health Analytics 100 Top Hospital this year and was one of 17 recipients of the 2016 Everest Award from Truven, which recognizes hospitals that, in addition to achieving bench- mark status for one year, set national bench- marks for the fastest long-term improvement. In 2015-16, U.S. News & World Report ranked Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla the No. 7 hospital in California and nationally ranked eight of the hospital's adult specialties. Sentara Norfolk (Va.) General Hospital. Sen- tara Norfolk General Hospital was known as Retreat for the Sick when it opened in 1888. At that time, there were fewer than 200 hospitals in the U.S. Today, Sentara Norfolk General is a 525-bed tertiary care facility and home to the area's only Level I trauma center. It is part of Sentara Healthcare, which has a medical staff of more than 3,800. Sentara Norfolk offers comprehensive medical services, and it has earned a reputation for pro- viding quality care. In February, Sentara Norfolk announced the launch of a five-year, $199 million expansion and modernization project aimed at improving the patient experience and bolstering its position as a mid-Atlantic referral center. In 2015-16, U.S. News & World Report ranked Sentara Norfolk General the No. 2 hospital in Virginia and nationally ranked two of the hos- pital's adult specialties. e Magnet-designat- ed hospital is the primary teaching affiliate of Eastern Virginia Medical School. Spectrum Health Medical Center–Butter- worth Hospital (Grand Rapids, Mich.). With a history dating back to 1873, Butter- worth Hospital is one of four facilities that make up Spectrum Health Medical Center, a system with 23,000 employees and 1,300 em- ployed physicians. Clinicians at the Family Birthplace at Butter- worth Hospital deliver more than 7,000 babies each year. e Magnet-designated hospital is home to a Level I trauma center and a regional burn center. e Wege Foundation Chest Pain Center, a collaboration between the Butter- worth Hospital emergency department and the Fred and Lena Meijer Heart Center, is the only nationally accredited chest pain center in Grand Rapids. U.S. News & World Report combines all of Spectrum's hospitals in Grand Rapids, includ- ing Butterworth, for its rankings. In 2015-16, the publication ranked Spectrum as the No. 3 hospital in Michigan and nationally ranked one of its adult specialties (No. 27 for pulmonolo- gy) and three of its pediatric specialties. Butter- worth Hospital was listed among Healthgrades' 50 Best Hospitals for 2015. In 2016, the 476- bed hospital earned a spot on Truven Health Analytics' list of 100 Top Hospitals in the U.S. Stanford (Calif.) Health Care-Stanford Hospi- tal. Founded in 1959 as the Palo Alto-Stanford Hospital Center, Stanford Hospital today has 613 licensed beds, about 1,500 faculty physi- cians and more than 1,000 interns and residents. e academic health system is building a new Stanford Hospital to meet California-mandat- ed seismic safety standards and support the overall growth of the medical center. Sched- uled to open to patients in early 2018, the 824,000-square-foot building will include a larger Level I trauma center and an emergency department that is more than twice the size of the current one.
