43 100 Hospital and Health System CMOs to Know | 2016 B ecker's Hospital Review has named "100 Hospital and Health System CMOs to Know," a list comprising physician leaders who have demonstrated a commitment to improving and innovating on patient safety and quality endeavors. e CMOs and other equivalent titles listed here exhibit dedication to clinical leadership and have contributed to establishing standards of excellence at their respective organizations. Nominations were considered and leaders were selected through an editorial review process. Note: is list is not an endorsement of included hospitals, health systems or associated healthcare providers, and leaders cannot pay for inclusion on this list. Hospital and health system CMOs are presented in alphabetical order. James Adams, MD. CMO of Northwest- ern Memorial HealthCare (Chicago). Dr. Adams joined Northwestern University in 2000 as a professor and chair of the department of emergency medicine, an appointment he still holds since being named CMO of Northwest- ern Memorial HealthCare in 2013. Prior to joining Northwestern, Dr. Adams was vice chair of the department of emergency medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston for five years and served on the faculty of Harvard Medical School in Cambridge, Mass. He also serves as senior associate editor of the journal Academic Emergency Medicine. Mohammed Shafeeq Ahmed, MD. COO and CMO of Baystate Mary Lane Hospital and Baystate Health Eastern Region (Springfield, Mass.). Dr. Ahmed first joined the system in 2003 as a physician and medical director of Baystate Medical Practices-Mary Lane OB/GYN and chief of obstetrics and gynecology. Since then, he has served as vice president of medical staff for Baystate Mary Lane Hospital and regional medical director of the Baystate Affiliated Phy- sician Organization before being named CMO in 2010 and COO in 2012. Damian "Pat" Alagia III, MD. Chief Physician Executive and CMO of Ken- tuckyOne Health (Louisville). Dr. Alagia began his career as a solo practitioner focusing on obstetrics and advanced laparoscopic surgery. He later served as president of the Medical Society of the District of Columbia, vice chairman of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington and as a founding member of Washington, D.C.-based George Washington University Hospital's minimally-invasive gy- necologic surgery program. Dr. Alagia joined KentuckyOne Health in his current capacity in September 2013. Todd J. Albert, MD. Surgeon-in-Chief and Medical Director of Hospital for Special Surgery (New York). In addition to serving as surgeon-in-chief of Hospital for Special Surgery, Dr. Albert is a professor of orthopedic surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York. Prior to joining HSS, he was chairman of the department of ortho- pedics and president of Philadelphia-based omas Jefferson University Hospital's Roth- man Institute. Dr. Albert has authored seven books and published more than 300 articles on a variety of topics. He serves on the boards of several journals and is past president of the Cervical Spine Research Society. Michael Anderson, MD. CMO of Uni- versity Hospitals Case Medical Center (Cleveland). Dr. Anderson was appointed to the UH Rainbow Babies and Children's Hos- pital staff in 2006 and served as vice president and CMO of University Hospitals of Cleveland before being appointed to his current role in 2011. He is a consultant to the CDC and HHS' National Disaster Medical System and was appointed chair of the National Adviso- ry Committee on Children and Disasters by the Obama administration. Dr. Anderson is an associate professor of pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Stanley W. Ashley, MD. Senior Vice President for Clinical Affairs and CMO of Brigham and Women's Hospital (Boston). In addition to serving as CMO of Brigham and Women's Hospital since 1996, Dr. Ashley is vice chair of surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital, a professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School in Cambridge, Mass., and attending surgeon in the Gastrointestinal Cancer Center at Harvard's Dana-Farber Can- cer Institute. Prior to joining the system, he spent seven years at the University of Califor- nia Los Angeles as a professor of surgery. Dr. Ashley's research focuses on the pathophysi- ology of the small bowel and pancreas, and it is funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Thomas Balcezak, MD. Senior Vice President of Patient Safety and Quality and CMO of Yale-New Haven (Conn.) Hospital. Prior to being named CMO and se- nior vice president of patient safety and quality of Yale-New Haven Hospital, Dr. Balcezak held a number of administrative roles in the hospi- tal, including senior vice president and chief quality officer. He was also chief medical resi- dent at Yale-New Haven, where he completed his internship and residency training. He has a master's in public health and is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and American Board of Internal Medicine. David L. Battinelli, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of Northwell Health (Great Neck, N.Y.). In addition to serving as CMO of Northwell Health, Dr. Batti- nelli is dean for education at the Hofstra North- well School of Medicine. Prior to his current role, he was senior vice president for academic affairs and chief academic officer for Northwell, vice chairman for education, program director for the internal medicine residency program at Boston Medical Center and professor of med- icine at Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Battinelli is past president of the Associa- tion of Program Directors in Internal Medicine and has taught more than 200 local, regional and national faculty development seminars. Donald Bignotti, MD. Senior Vice Pres- ident and CMO of Trinity Health (Livo- nia, Mich.). Dr. Bignotti was appointed to his current role in 2011. Before then, he served as CMO of St. Joseph Mercy Oakland in Pontiac, Mich., for six years, taught family medicine and geriatrics at Bon Secours Hospital in Grosse Pointe, Mich., and was vice president of medical affairs at Bon Secours Cottage Health Services in Grosse Pointe.
