61 PRACTICE MANAGEMENT THOUGHT LEADERSHIP Hospital and Health System Transactions e Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board approved the merger of Chicago-based Northwestern Memorial HealthCare and KishHealth System in DeKalb, Ill. Providence, R.I.-based Care New En- gland Health System is pursuing an affiliation with New Bedford, Mass.-based Southcoast Health System. Allegheny Health Network Emergency Medicine Management, a joint venture between Pittsburgh-based Allegheny Health Network and Emergency Med- icine Physicians, a physician-owned emergency department group, agreed to manage the emergency room and the hospitalists at Somerset (Pa.) Hospital. Madison, Wis.-based Meriter-UnityPoint Health agreed to partner in the new UW Health Rehabilitation Hospital, also in Madison. Ashland, Ohio-based Samaritan Re- gional Health System, a single-hospital system, is now part of Cleveland-based University Hospitals. To reflect the inte- gration with UH, the 55-bed hospital will be called University Hospitals Samaritan Medical Center. e University of Chicago Medicine and Ingalls Health System, a single-hospital system based in Harvey, Ill., singed a letter of intent to join forces as a combined integrated health system. Allegiance Health in Jackson, Mich., signed a letter of intent to join Henry Ford Health System, a five-hospital sys- tem based in Detroit. Publicly traded investment manager Apollo Global Management signed a definitive agreement to acquire Regional- Care Hospital Partners, an eight-hospital system based in Brentwood, Tenn. Oregon Health & Science University in Portland and Salem (Ore.) Health finalized an agreement to manage their respective clinical services as an integrat- ed health system. Rochester, N.Y.-based UR Medicine is expanding its network to five hospitals with the addition of two new affiliations, with Wellsville, N.Y.-based Jones Memo- rial Hospital and Dansville, N.Y.-based Noyes Health. Saint Michael's Medical Center in Newark, N.J., which filed for bankruptcy protection in August, accepted a $62.2 million bid from Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare Services. Virginia Mason Health System in Seattle will affiliate with Yakima, Wash.-based Memorial Family of Services. Oklahoma City-based Foundation HealthCare, which owns and operates surgical hospitals, signed an agreement to acquire 69-bed University General Hos- pital in Houston, which filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this year. Partnership talks ended between Trinity Health, a nonprofit health system based in Minot, N.D., and Billings Clinic RegionalCare, a joint venture of Billings (Mont.) Clinic and Brentwood, Tenn.- based RegionalCare Hospital Partners. Dearborn County Hospital in Lawrence- burg, Ind., plans to affiliate with Cincin- nati-based TriHealth. St. Louis-based BJC HealthCare and Me- morial Hospital in Belleville, Ill., final- ized the terms of their proposed strategic affiliation. Cleveland Clinic took over full owner- ship of Akron (Ohio) General Health System Nov. 2, following review of the deal by the Ohio Attorney General and the Federal Trade Commission. Cleveland-based University Hospitals took on full ownership of 204-bed St. John Medical Center in Westlake, Ohio. Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare and Brentwood, Tenn.-based Duke LifePoint Healthcare entered a definitive agreement for the sale of Tenet's North Carolina hospitals and associated operations. e boards of commissioners of Mount Vernon, Wash.-based Skagit Region- al Health and Arlington, Wash.-based Cascade Valley Hospital and Clinics ap- proved a definitive affiliation agreement. Onslow Memorial Hospital in Jackson- ville, N.C., scrapped plans to merge with CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern, N.C., and Vidant Health in Green- ville, N.C. Kalispell (Mont.) Regional Healthcare and Whitefish, Mont.-based North Valley Hospital agreed to move forward with an affiliation agreement that officials say will enhance the delivery of healthcare in the Flathead Valley and Northwest Montana. Philadelphia-based University of Penn- sylvania Health System is partnering with Abu Dhabi-based VPS Healthcare, a 14-hospital system spanning the Middle East, Europe, the U.K. and India. Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente and San Francisco-based Dignity Health agreed to jointly own St. Joseph's Med- ical Center in Stockton, Calif., in a first- of-its-kind partnership for the healthcare providers. Loma Linda (Calif.) University Health and the Southern Mono Healthcare Dis- trict in Mammoth Lakes, Calif., entered into an affiliation agreement. n
