We're proud to announce the establishment of The Root Cause Coalition, a non-profit coalition dedicated
to engaging health professionals from all disciplines, public health organizations, government officials, the
nutrition and food industry, and anyone dedicated to collectively developing and deploying effective research,
education, advocacy and community-based programming that address the root causes of food insecurity and
the negative health outcomes that result.
By the numbers:
14.3% ........................................... U.S. households considered food insecure in 2013.
19.5% ........................................... U.S. households with children considered food insecure.
31% ............................................... Seniors who cut or skip meals for lack of money.
$167.5 billion ............................... Annual cost of hunger in the United States.
$130.5 billion .............................. Annual cost of hunger to the U.S. healthcare system.
$42,400 ....................................... Estimated lifetime cost of hunger to every U.S. citizen.
With more than 17.5 million U.S. households facing food insecurity, the health consequences are significant.
And lack of access to nutritious food leads to higher instances of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and other
chronic illnesses. Food insecurity takes a toll on individuals across the age spectrum, from birth through the
elder years. It affects both individuals and communities.
Join us.
Collectively, we can meet our Mission to address the social determinants of health, with specific emphasis
on hunger as a public health issue, which will improve the health status of individuals and communities.
