The only Emergency Medical Kit designed for Ambulatory Surgical Facilities 8 Hospitals & Health Systems Opening ASCs By Megan Wood Here are eight hospitals and health systems opening or expanding ambula- tory surgery centers. e new Shriners Hospital for Children Medical Center in Lexington, Ky., will include an ASC. Rush University Medical Center and Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, both in Chicago, have discussed opening a new ambulatory care center in Oak Brook, Ill. Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County continues to look for funding for its new surgery center. e Orthopedic Associates of Wisconsin has begun building a $20 million surgery center and clinic. Athens (Ala.)-Limestone Hospital's application for a $30 million surgery center has been approved by the Alabama Certificate of Need Board. Surgery Center Services of America in Mesa, Ariz., plans to build a new surgery center in Latham, N.Y. Hopkins County Memorial Hospital in Sulphur Springs, Texas, and CHRIS- TUS Health in San Antonio, may open a new $2 million ASC. Cleveland Clinic Florida plans to build a new clinic and ASC in Coral Springs. n Hospital-Employed Physician Practices Tend to Favor Their Parent Hospitals: 5 Observations By Megan Wood S tanford researchers analyzed referral patterns of independent physicians and hospital-employed physicians, according to PBS Newshour. e National Bureau of Economic Research published the report. Here are five observations: 1. e researchers found that if physicians are employed by hospitals, they will most likely send patients to their employer hospitals for treatment. 2. e findings raised concerns that patients aren't receiving the high- est quality of care, if physicians are pushed into certain decisions be- cause of their hospital bosses. 3. e study authors reported that physicians employed by hospitals sent an average of 83 percent of patients to their employer hospitals. 4.
