67 50 Critical Access Hospital CEOs to Know 2015 Becker's Hospital Review is pleased to recognize 50 hospital CEOs, presidents and administrators for their leadership of widely recognized critical access hospitals. e men and women on this list lead the hospitals that appeared on this publica- tion's 50 Critical Access Hospitals to Know list, published in September. Note: Leaders are presented in alphabetical order. Todd Almendinger. President and CEO of Magruder Hospital (Port Clinton, Ohio). Mr. Almendinger was appointed president and CEO of Magruder Hospital in November 2012. Previously, he served as the hospital's vice president of finance and CFO — his first senior-level position at the hospital, but not his first position ever: He was a Magruder intern during his college days. Mr. Almendinger has also served as the vice president of finance and CFO of Grady Memorial Hospital in Delaware, Ohio. Karen Barber. CEO of Yoakum (Texas) Community Hospital. Ms. Barber has been with Yoakum Community Hospital since 1992, when she joined as a nurse. She became CEO in 2006. In 2010, Ms. Barber was awarded the Texas Hospi- tal Association's Pioneer Award, which recognizes excellence in rural hospital management. Mark Biscone. President and CEO of Waldo County Healthcare (Belfast, Maine). Mr. Biscone has been with Waldo County Healthcare for more than 35 years. In addition to leading Waldo County Healthcare, of which Waldo County General Hospital is a part, Mr. Biscone is also president and CEO of Pen Bay Healthcare, both of which are part of Portland-based MaineHealth. In 2014, Mr. Biscone was named Citizen of the Year by the Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce. Arthur Blank. President and CEO of Mount Desert Island Hospital (Bar Harbor, Maine). Mr. Blank has been CEO of Mount Desert Island Hospital since 1999. It was under his leadership that MDIH became designated as a critical access hospital. He also helped establish the community's first full-service behav- ioral health center. Mr. Blank has served the Maine Hospital Association in various capacities, including chair of the board of directors. Rod Boula. CEO and Administrator of Elizabethtown (N.Y.) Community Hos- pital. Mr. Boula has served as Elizabeth- town Community Hospital's CEO and ad- ministrator since 2004, prior to which he was the vice president of administration at Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone, N.Y. Mr. Boula also held numerous exec- utive roles at Clion-Fine Hospital in Star Lake, N.Y., including administrator, CFO and CEO. Outside of work, this husband and father of three is an outdoor activity aficionado. Mr. Boula is a licensed guide with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and is involved with numerous organizations that exist to preserve and expand hunting, fishing and other outdoor recreational pursuits in the Adirondack region. Ed Brunn. President and CEO of Spar- row Clinton Hospital (St. Johns, Mich.). Mr. Brunn has been president of Sparrow Clinton Hospital since 1994, and he added CEO to his title in 2004. Mr. Brunn holds a master's degree in hospital administra- tion from Xavier University in Cincinnati. Patrick E. Carron. President and CEO of Perry County Memorial Hospital (Per- ryville, Mo.). Mr. Carron started his ca- reer in healthcare as a registered nurse. He eventually joined Perry County Memorial Hospital in July 1993 as the vice president of operations and assistant administrator. Mr. Carron was promoted to the helm of PCMH in October 2005. In addition to holding a BSN from St. Louis University School of Health Sciences and Nursery, Mr. Carron also holds a master's degree in healthcare administration from Wash- ington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Nicole Clapp. President and CEO of Grant Regional Health Center (Lancast- er, Wis.). Ms. Clapp took over as Grant Regional Health Center's president and CEO in April 2006. She joined Grant Regional 10 years prior in 1996 as qual- ity improvement coordinator and then served as vice president of professional services until her promotion to CEO. She is a member of the Gamma Chapter of the Sigma eta Tau International Honor So- ciety of Nursing and enjoys volunteering for the Lancaster Lion's Club, the Lan- caster Jaycees and the National American Legion Auxiliary Finance Committee.
