25 CRITICAL ACCESS 50 Critical Access Hospitals to Know A s of April 15, there were 1,332 critical access hospitals throughout the United States. Becker's Healthcare is pleased to highlight the following subset of 50 critical access hospitals to know. Critical access hospitals are fairly unique as acute care hospitals go. ey must have no more than 25 inpatient beds, have an annual average length of stay of no more than 96 hours for acute care, offer 24/7 emergency care and be located at least 35 miles from another hospital, according to HHS. e following 50 meet all of those requirements while going above and beyond to care for their pa- tients. To develop this list, the Becker's team conduct- ed research and examined several reputable hospital ranking sources relevant to critical access hospitals, such as iVantage Health Analytics, the National Rural Health Association, Healthgrades and CMS' Hospital Compare, among other sources, including prior lists from this publication. Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital (Lincoln, Ill.). Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital is more than a century old, opening in 1902 as Deaconess Hospital. e hospital moved into a brand new facility in 2011 that includes an adjoining medical office building. Since moving into its new digs, ALMH has garnered several prestigious awards and recognitions. iVantage Health Analytics has named it to its Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals list twice, most recently in 2015, and the hospital was also named as a Most Wired hospi- tal this year by the American Hospital Association's Health Forum and the College of Healthcare Informa- tion Management Executives. In December 2014, the hospital was awarded e Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval for Hospital Accreditation. Aspirus Grand View Hospital (Ironwood, Mich.). Aspirus Grand View Hospital was established in 1923 and has served the people of Upper Michigan and northern Wisconsin ever since. e hospital includes a surgical center, two clinic locations (one in Iron- wood and another in Hurley, Wis.), a home health service and an eye and optical center.
