This list consists of advocates, professors, re- searchers, administrators and healthcare provid- ers who have won awards, published articles, spo- ken out and led initiatives to reduce patient harm and ensure safety in the industry. The Becker's editorial team considered nomina- tions and selected leaders for this list through an editorial review process. Note: Leaders are presented in alphabetical order and could not pay for inclusion. James Bagian, MD. Chairman of the Patient Safety Advisory Group Joint Commission. Dr. Bagian has served as chairman of the Joint Commission Patient Safety Advisory Group since 2009. He is also director of the Center for Healthcare Engineering and Patient Safety at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, a position he has held since 2010. As CHEPS director, Dr. Bagian assembles and leads multidisciplinary teams from across the university to employ a systems-based approach to improving the qual- ity, safety, efficiency and value of healthcare pro- vided to patients. Dr. Bagian — also a former NASA astronaut who flew on two space shuttle missions — was previously the first director of Veteran Health's National Center for Patient Safety and the first chief patient safety officer for the Department of Veterans Affairs from 1999 to 2010. David J. Ballard, MD, PhD. Chief Quality Of- ficer for Baylor Scott & White Health (Dallas) and President of the STEEEP Global Institute. As chief quality officer of Baylor Scott & White, Dr. Ballard designs, implements and evaluates clinical quality improvement initiatives across the system. Under Dr. Ballard's leadership, the system has been recognized by many organiza- tions for its healthcare improvement accom- plishments. As STEEEP president, he provides oversight, sets strategy and direction and priori- tizes initiatives and operational functions that fall within the six domains of STEEEP — safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable and patient- centered. Throughout his career, Dr. Ballard has served on numerous National Quality Forum committees and editorial boards, and he pub- lished a book in 2013 on Baylor's healthcare quality improvement journey, called "Achieving STEEEP Health Care." David Westfall Bates, MD. Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Patient Safety. Dr. Bates was recently made the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Patient Safety. In February, he was also made chief innova- tion officer at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hos- pital. As chief innovation officer, he will translate inventions, discoveries and new ideas into services and products that benefit patients and improve care delivery. Prior to his appointment, Dr. Bates served as chief quality officer at the Boston hospi- tal.
