22 Patient Safety Toolkit: Hand Hygiene T o supplement the material and analysis provided by Becker's Clinical Quality and Infection Control, Becker's Healthcare offers an online database of free and low-cost downloadable patient safety tools and resources, putting them all in one place for user conve- nience. The database contains tools for patients and providers on all quality-related matters, in- cluding general and specific infection prevention and control, patient safety culture, change man- agement, adverse event prevention and quality reporting. The following are 10 of the most popular hand hygiene-focused patient safety tools on the Beck- er's Hospital Review and Becker's ASC Review web- sites, starting with the most popular. Hand Hygiene Compliance Booster Checklist: Johns Hopkins University Medicine in Balti- more offers complementary hand hygiene re- sources through its hand hygiene website, Hop- kins Hands. This includes the "Leader Guide: How to Improve Your HH Compliance Unit/ Service Leader Checklist" to be used periodi- cally to ensure all actions that can be taken to improve hand hygiene compliance are actually occurring. 2 Hand Hygiene Posters in 6 Languages: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers free, downloadable hand hygiene posters, includ- ing "Keep Calm and Wash Your Hands" and "One Trillion Germs Can Live in a Gram of Poop," in six languages: English, Spanish, French, Arabic, Bengali and Chinese. WHO Hand Hygiene Observation Chart: The World Health Organization offers a free, down- loadable observation form for hospitals and other provider organizations to complete when moni- toring hand hygiene compliance. Park Nicollet Hospital's Hand Hygiene Obser- vation Chart: St. Louis Park, Minn.-based Park Nicollet Hospital offers a complimentary hand hygiene observation tool for a basic audit of hand hygiene compliance. VA Tool for Recording Hand Hygiene: The De- partment of Veterans Affairs' National Center for Patient Safety offers free resources for improving hand hygiene, such as the "Hand Hygiene/Glove Use Observation Tool for Recording Staff Hand Hygiene Practices" used to monitor compliance with hand hygiene improvement programs. CDC's Hand Hygiene Video: The CDC offers the "Put Your Hands Together Video" showing the importance of hand hygiene for use in waiting rooms and websites. Survey of Staff Hand Hygiene Perception: The Minnesota Hospital Association produces a 10-minute questionnaire that asks healthcare per- sonnel about their attitudes toward hand hygiene, perceived effectiveness of hand hygiene interven- tions and possible barriers to reaching optimal hand hygiene compliance. 'This Is Your Hand Unwashed' Poster: This col- orful poster from Johns Hopkins Medicine shows a "normal" hand next to an unwashed hands and what different bacteria and diseases could be present, along with a reminder for staff to wash their hands. 'Clean Hands Save Lives' Poster: The CDC offers this 29" x 19" poster to show the germs that lead to infection and that could be found on health- care worker's unclean hands.
