61 Leadership & Management Jefferson Health's CEO Has Big Hopes for New Innovation Hub By Molly Gamble 4 Questions All CEOs Should Ask Themselves Each Year By Scott Becker T he new year is an opportune time to pause and refocus. As we be- gin 2015, we like to ask ourselves a few questions to align our ef- forts with our organizations' goals. Here are four questions every CEO should ask him or herself about strategy this year. 1. Key leadership. Identify your top leaders. Do you have a clear line of communication with those leaders? Are you in regular communication with them? Are they developing and managing their teams? Do you and they actively develop the next set of leaders? 2. Clear goals. Does your organization have clear objectives and goals? How well have you communicated these objectives and priorities for the next three months and the next year? 3. Building around strengths. Reexamine the market and your orga- nization's position in the market. Do you look at what is working well in terms of profits and revenues, as well as other efforts? Should you redouble efforts around those things that are working well? Are there additional op- portunities that are adjacent to these efforts? 4. Key threats. Pinpoint the top three or four threats to your organization. How significant are they? What can you do to reduce exposure to these threats? Asking these four questions can help sharpen your vision and lay the groundwork for more efficient, productive leadership. n I n January, Philadelphia-based Thomas Jef- ferson University and Jefferson Health Sys- tem opened their Jefferson Accelerator Zone, a space dedicated to innovation, according to a Philadelphia Business Journal report. The two-story, open plan JAZ doesn't occupy a large amount of space on Jefferson's "sprawling Center City campus," according to the report, but it's intended to serve as a hub for healthcare in- novation among physicians, researchers, fellows, nurses and others. Jefferson will do several things supporting this, such as refining ideas with bud- ding entrepreneurs, accessing commercial op- portunities, filing copyrights, trademarks and patents, and identifying potential commercial partners, according to the report. If you've seen ABC's "Shark Tank," the following might sound familiar: A Jefferson executive said the JAZ will host similar sessions in which inno- vators present their ideas. Jefferson is planning to establish a fund to invest in the businesses it helps start, but the amount of that fund has not yet been determined, according to the report. "Historically, Jefferson has not been very good at making innovation easy," Stephen Klasko, MD, MBA, president and CEO of Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health, told the PBJ. "We are not alone in that among academic medical centers. [But] we've been working on it, making it clear to folks that it's a different day. This isn't your mother's Jefferson." "The gauntlet I've thrown down," Mr. Klasko said in the report, "is I want Jefferson to be the first academic medical center where you can advance in your career based on entrepreneurism and in- novation." Mr. Klasko said the system is already in talks with several large companies about innovative partnerships, including Johnson & Johnson and Merck. n SUBSCRIBE TODAY!
