offers an online database of free and low-cost
downloadable patient safety tools and resources,
putting them all in one place for user conve-
nience. The database contains tools for patients
and providers on all quality-related matters, in-
cluding general and specific infection prevention
and control, patient safety culture, change man-
agement, adverse event prevention and quality
reporting.
Here are 10 recently added patient safety tools:
CDC's National Flu Shot Week materials: The
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers
a myriad of materials for National Influenza Vac-
cination Week, including Facebook images and
customizable fliers and posters.
AHA's ambulatory care sensitive conditions
toolkit: The American Hospital Association's
Physician Leadership Forum has released its
"Ambulatory Care Sensitive Conditions Tool-
kit," which includes resources for hospitals and
health systems, clinicians and patients. It includes
guides, fact sheets, frequently asked questions and
action plans.
AHA, AMA, APIC flu resources: The Association
for Professionals in Infection Control and Epide-
miology, the American Medical Association and
the American Hospital Association are "united
against the flu," and provide free resources like
prevention e-cards and informative articles on
why to not delay getting vaccinated and how par-
ents and families can partner to prevent the flu in
younger children.
AORN's surgical fire safety kit: The Association
of periOperative Registered Nurses offers a fire
safety toolkit to help train perioperative team
members to prevent surgical fires, including a fire
prevention slideshow.
Flu planning exercise: The Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention offers an interactive tool,
Pan Flu Scramble Exercise, that gauges the how
prepared healthcare stakeholders are for flu-relat-
ed patient surges.
Flu patient education posters: Genentech of-
fers patient education resources for the flu like
"Recognize Your Symptoms" and "Now That You
Have The Flu" educational posters for adults and
children, as well as a "Fight the Flu" brochure for
patients detailing steps they can do to prevent the
flu and what to do if they fall ill.
How to treat severe infections in the ICU: BMC
Infectious Diseases released a new series that in-
cludes papers on topics like how to avoid micro-
aspiration, treatment of gram-positive infections
in critically ill patients and treatment of blood-
stream infections in ICUs.
Patient controlled analgesia practices poster:
The Physician-Patient Alliance for Health & Safe-
ty offers a complimentary poster that outlines
eight strategies to improve perioperative patient
safety.
Preparing for Ebola in the OR: The Association
for periOperative Registered Nurses put together
guidelines for perioperative personnel that cover
how to care for Ebola patients in surgical settings
in its AORN Journal.
Survey of staff 's hand hygiene perception: The
Minnesota Hospital Association's complimentary
questionnaire for surveying staff on hand hygiene
perception and practices asks healthcare profes-
sionals about their attitudes toward hand hygiene,
their perceived effectiveness of hand hygiene in-
terventions and barriers to reaching optimal hand
hygiene. n
