40 Financial Management P rocedures performed in hospital operating rooms represent a large chunk of healthcare costs, but which procedures cost the system the most? According to a statistical brief from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, surgical procedures amount to almost half of all costs associated with hospital stays even though they only make up 29 percent of hospital stays. Certain procedures cost more than others. For example, hospital stays for spinal fusions cumulatively cost more than $12.8 billion in 2011, the most of any OR procedure. Knee replacements and angioplasties were not far behind. These procedures are both expensive and performed frequently. The surgical procedures with the highest average costs per hospital stay in 2011 were heart valve procedures ($53,400), coronary artery bypass graft sur- geries ($38,700) and small bowel resections ($34,500).
