Hospital & Health System Executive Moves Allegheny Health Network in Pittsburgh and Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Medicine signed a memorandum of understanding to create a formal affiliation between Allegheny and the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center. Issues stemming from a long government review forced St. Louis-based As- cension Health to call off the sale of two of its hospitals to HCA Midwest Health System in Kansas City, Mo. Atlantic Health System, based in Morristown, N.J., agreed to acquire Hack- ettstown (N.J.) Regional Medical Center from Gaithersburg, Md.-based Ad- ventist HealthCare. Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and Lahey Health in Burl- ington, Mass., are reportedly no longer looking to merge. Bogalusa (La.) Medical Center, part of Baton Rouge-based Louisiana State University Health Care Services Division, announced it will become Our Lady of the Angels Hospital under a partnership agreement with the Fran- ciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System, also based in Baton Rouge. Bon Secours Virginia Health System in Richmond and Hampton Roads, Va., agreed to acquire Rappahannock General Hospital in Kilmarnock, Va. Two health systems located throughout the northern and western suburbs of Chicago — Winfield, Ill.-based Cadence Health and Rockford (Ill.) Health System — ended merger discussions. Carilion Clinic, based in Roanoke, Va., decided to transfer full ownership of Bedford (Va.) Memorial Hospital and its Oakwood Health and Rehabilita- tion Center to Lynchburg, Va.-based Centra Health. Casa Grande (Ariz.) Regional Medical Center filed for Chapter 11 bank- ruptcy, a maneuver executives said was needed to complete its sale to Phoe- nix-based Banner Health. Englewood, Colo.-based Catholic Health Initiatives and St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck, N.D., signed a nonbinding letter of intent to form an affiliation. After several months of negotiations and fine-tuning, Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems closed on its acquisition of Health Manage- ment Associates in Naples, Fla. CHS also signed a definitive agreement to acquire all assets of Sharon (Pa.) Regional Health System. Cumberland Medical Center in Crossville, Tenn., completed its merger with Covenant Health in Knoxville, Tenn., becoming the ninth hospital in the nonprofit health system. Kamala Harris, California's attorney general, gave the green light to two sepa- rate nonprofit hospital transactions: the sale of Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock, Calif., to Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare Corp. and the acquisition of Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica by Providence Health & Ser- vices, Southern California.
