Beyond providing care in the low-cost, high-quality environment of ASCs, phy- sician leaders lead clinical and administrative teams, establish successful ASCs, stand up for the industry and found companies that support industry growth. From founding members of surgery centers and com- panies to medical directors and industry advocates, here are 101 physician leaders who have made signifi- cant contributions to the ASC sector. David Abraham, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon and partner with The Reading Neck & Spine Center in Wyomissing, Pa. He completed a spine surgery fellow- ship in Detroit and is a member of the North Ameri- can Spine Society and American Academy of Ortho- paedic Surgeons. Charlie Agnone, MD, FACS, is a board-certified oph- thalmologist and a founding member of Marysville (Ohio) Surgical Center. Dr. Agnone is also on the Am- bulatory Surgery Center Association board of directors. Dale Armstrong, MD, is chairman of the board of Mason City (Iowa) Surgery Center as well as mem- ber and current president of the board of directors at Mason City Clinic. He is a member of the American Psychiatric Association, American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Oklahoma Psychiatric Association. Joseph Banno, MD, is founder and co-owner of Peo- ria (Ill.) Day Surgery Center. He has been associated with Peoria Urological Associates for more than 30 years. Over the past few years, Dr. Banno has been in- volved in developing the world's first mobile ambula- tory surgery center. Stacey Berner, MD, is president and principal of SurgCenter Development, which he joined in 2012. He served as medical director of the Hand Centers at Carroll Hospital Center and Northwest Hospital Cen- ter in Maryland. He helped develop and pioneer hand and wrist arthroscopy techniques as well as robotic surgery. Robert Boeglin, MD, has been the board president of the Midwest Eye Institute in Indianapolis since 1997. He is also the co-founder of Health Venture Manage- ment, a company that develops surgery center part- nerships between physicians. He left clinical practice in 2002 but has continues to serve as Midwest Eye's president. Thomas Bombardier, MD, FASC, is a founding prin- cipal of Ambulatory Surgical Centers of America. He is an ophthalmologist and prior to founding ASCOA he established the largest ophthalmic practice in West- ern Massachusetts, two ambulatory surgical centers and a regional referral center. Robert Bray Jr., MD, is founder, CEO and a neurolog- ical surgeon at DISC Sports & Spine Center in Marina Del Rey, Calif. He founded DISC in 2006 and opened a second surgery center in Newport Beach in early 2012. During his career, Dr. Bray participated in the design and development of the Zeiss Microscope. Joseph Burkhardt, DO, is a board-certified orthope- dic surgeon with Meridian Surgical Partners' Brook- side Surgery Center in Battle Creek, Mich. Dr. Bur- khardt earned his medical degree from Kansas City (Mo.) University of Medicine. Matthew Bush, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and the board president of Central Maine Orthopedics, which has an AAAHC-accredited ambu- latory surgery center. Dr. Bush joined CMO in 2006. He focuses on hand and upper extremity surgery. John Caruso, MD, FACS, is a neurosurgeon and founder of Parkway Surgery Center in Hagerstown, Md. The ASC is a Blue Chip Surgical Center Partners affiliate. He has more than 16 years of experience in neurological surgery and board certification from the American Board of Neurological Surgery. Richard N. Christie, MD, is a vice president of opera- tional development at Ambulatory Surgical Centers of America. He is a board-certified obstetrician/gynecol- ogist and owned a private practice in Newport Beach, Calif., for 15 years. Stephen Cohen, MD, is the medical director of Spivey Station Surgery Center in Jonesboro, Ga., and serves as a diplomat on the National Board of Medical Ex- aminers. He is a member of the American Medical As- sociation, American College of Gastroenterology and American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. Edward F. Coles, MD, FACP, FACG, is a board-certi- fied gastroenterologist with Gastroenterology of San Marcos (Texas). Dr. Coles is a board member of New Braunfels Christus and Physicians Surgery Center. He also founded Central Texas Ambulatory Endoscopy Center in San Marcos, of which he currently serves as a managing partner. Christine Corbin, MD, is the medical director of Sur- gery Center at Tanasbourne in Hillsboro, Ore. The center is a joint venture with the surgeon-owner in- vestor group, Providence Health & Services and Blue Chip Surgical Center Partners. She is also the founder and president of Northwest Gynecology Associates. R. Blake Curd, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon with Or- thopedic Institute in Sioux Falls, S.D., and chairman of the board of directors for Surgical Management Profes- sionals. He is president-elect of Physician Hospitals of America and manager for Medical Facilities Corp. Dr. Curd serves on the South Dakota State Senate.
