43 GASTROENTEROLOGY Gastroenterology the most in-demand specialty: 3 notes By Patsy Newitt G astroenterologists are the most in-demand physician specialty, according to Rosman Search's 2024 Physician Hiring Trends report. Here are three more notes on the gastroenterologist workforce: 1. More than 50% of active gastroenterologists are over 55. 2. The annual number of available training positions in gastroenterology increased from 325 to 616 from 2008 to 2002. The annual number of applicants increased 57% in that period. 3. The gastroenterologist shortage is projected to reach 1,630 by 2025 n Medtronic, ModMed to collaborate on GI Genius documentation By Claire Wallace M edtronic has entered into a new partnership with specialty- focused EHR company ModMed to enhance documentation of its GI Genius polyp detection tool. GI Genius uses artificial intelligence to improve the rates of polyp detection among colonoscopy patients, achieving a 50% reduction in missed colorectal polyps over a standard colonoscopy, according to an April 10 press release. Medtronic will input data from GI Genius into ModMed's GI-focused platform to reduce the manual effort of documenting procedural metrics captured during the colonoscopy process. "We've been a customer of both Medtronic and ModMed for years, which has been beneficial to help address the sharp rise in demand of patients seeking colonoscopies since guidelines for screening for colon cancer changed," Michael Weinstein, MD, CEO at Capital Digestive Care, said in the release. "By having these two technologies work together, we will see significantly faster reporting and processing times, enabling us to see more patients." n Ambu earns FDA clearance for single-use gastroscope By Carly Behm Ambu earned FDA clearance for its aScope Gastro Large and Ambu aBox 2, the company said in an April 8 news release. e aScope Gastro Large has a 4.2mm working channel and is designed for acute therapeutic procedures in the ICU. It also can be used for procedures outside the endoscopy unit such as surgical gastroscopies. e gastroscope is the first single-use device of its kind with a 4.2mm working channel and the first endoscope made with bioplastics. n United Digestive, OMNY Health strikes GI partnership By Claire Wallace G astroenterology supergroup United Digestive has partnered with OMNY Health, a provider of healthcare data and insights. United Digestive will join over 5,000 GI providers serving more than 10 million patients within OMNY's research network, according to an April 22 press release. OMNY works with health systems to enable insights on patient population characteristics, care delivery patterns and treatment outcomes based on data from de-identified inpatient and ambulatory care electronic health records. The GI offering will include information covering pharmacy orders, lab and diagnostic test results, comorbidities, symptom checklists, and provider clinical assessment scores. n
