27 TRANSACTIONS What Amazon did in 2022: 6 moves ASCs should know By Patsy Newitt From billion-dollar acquisitions to new care offerings, Amazon continued its push into healthcare in 2022. Here are six major moves ASCs need to know: 1. In April, Amazon said it intended to hire a hospital C-leader whisperer. 2. In July, Amazon agreed to buy primary care company One Medical for $3.9 billion. e acquisition still faces antitrust challenges, though it did clear a recent hurdle in the state of Oregon. 3. In August, Amazon said it planned to cease operations of its Amazon Care service for employers aer Dec. 31. 4. In November, Amazon unveiled a new virtual care offering called Amazon Clinic. 5. Amazon increased its lead in the global cloud industry in 2022, in part through its collaborations with leading health systems. 6. As of December, the workforce reduction at Amazon was expected to number about 20,000 people. It said it's laying off staff in departments such as devices and books into 2023 to deal with the shiing economic conditions for tech companies. n Optum's busy start to 2023: 3 moves ASCs need to know By Patsy Newitt Optum has inked two major deals and reported a jump in revenue since the beginning of 2023. Here are three moves to know: 1. Optum Health reported big financial gains in 2022 and drove a 17 percent increase in Optum's overall revenue. Optum reported $47.9 billion revenue for the fourth quarter of 2022 and $182.8 billion for the full year. Optum Health's revenue hit $18.4 billion revenue in the fourth quarter and $71.1 billion for the full year, a 31.6 percent increase over 2021. 2. Optum took over revenue cycle management and information technology operations of Owensboro (Ky.) Health. The agreement to take over the health system's operations will result in 575 of the healthcare system's employees moving to Optum in April. 3. Brewer, Maine-based Northern Light Health is working to transfer 1,400 of its employees to Optum. The office-based employees — including those in revenue cycle management, information systems, inpatient care management, analytics, project management and supply chain roles — will keep their jobs, although they will now be employees of Optum. n HCA revenue hits $60.2B, outpatient cases climb: 5 things to know By Cameron Cortigiano H CA Healthcare had $60.233 billion in revenue for 2022, an increase from $58.752 billion in 2021, according to its Jan. 27 financial and operating report. Here are five outpatient and ASC takeaways: 1. HCA operated 182 hospitals and 126 freestanding outpatient surgery centers as of Dec. 31. The company also has 21 freestanding endoscopy centers. 2. Outpatient revenues accounted for 37.5 percent of all patient revenues in the fourth quarter and 37.6 percent for the entirety of 2022. 3. The number of outpatient surgery cases performed decreased down to 256,610 in the fourth quarter of 2022 from 265,709 in 2021. Outpatient cases were up 1.5 percent to more than 1 million for the full year. 4. Same facility outpatient surgery cases were up slightly in the fourth quarter to 255,805 and grew nearly 2 percent for the full year. 5. The company reported 2022 fourth quarter revenue of $15.497 billion compared to $15.064 billion in the fourth quarter of 2021. n
