10 BECKER'S DENTAL + DSO REVIEW // VOL. 2023 NO. 1 DENTAL SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS How 4 entrepreneurial DSOs grew in 2022 By Ariana Portalatin S everal small-scale DSOs spent the year affiliating with new practices, entering new markets and adding industry partnerships to grow their businesses. Here is a summary of what four entrepreneurial DSOs accomplished in 2022: Guardian Dentistry Partners (Miami) Guardian Dentistry Partners added several practices this year, expanding its network to more than 100 partners in 11 states. In August, the DSO appointed Max Van Vliet vice president of partnership development to work with potential doctor partners on practice goals. Sage Dental (Boca Raton, Fla.) As of September, Sage Dental added 14 practices and more than 140 clinicians across Florida and Georgia. The organization also hired five new directors of market operations to oversee the daily operations and functions of practices. In addition to practice growth, Sage Dental has focused on technology initiatives to enhance patient care, inking partnerships with dental artificial intelligence company Pearl and Japanese clear align manufacturer SheepMedical. The DSO supports 80 dental practices in two states. Dental365 (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) Dental365 has locations in Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. It reached 100 locations in September with a new facility in Brick Township, N.J. Among the many practice affiliations and acquisitions made this year, the company placed No. 89 on Inc. magazine's list of the fastest growing private companies in the Northeast, experiencing 102 percent growth during a two-year period. It also appointed Thomas Eicke, RN, its new president, and David Jordan as its CFO. Dental365's COO Terri Krauss told Becker's she expects to see the company surpass 200 supported practices by the end of 2023. Gen4 Dental Partners (Tempe, Ariz.) Gen4 Dental Partners expanded its footprint in several states, including Kansas, Utah, Minnesota, Michigan and Arizona. In April, the organization hired Rob Mullins to be its COO. The DSO partnered with Bill Dorfman, DDS, a cosmetic and general dentist, entrepreneur, lecturer and author practicing at Century City Aesthetic Dentistry in Los Angeles. Gen4 Dental Partners has 76 locations in 10 states, 50 dentist partners and more than 1,300 employees. n Heartland, Aspen and Pacific Dental Services: 24 moves in 2022 By Riz Hatton Here are 24 moves from the three largest DSOs that Becker's reported on in 2022: Heartland Dental (Effingham, Ill.): More than 1,650 practices 1. Heartland Dental introduced its new brand campaign, Doctor Difference, celebrating its culture and business model. 2. Heartland Dental provided support for a merger of three Canadian dental companies to create the largest DSO in the country. 3. Mission, Kan.-based Concorde Career Colleges partnered with Heartland Dental to award $40,000 in scholarships to training dental hygienists. 4. Four Corners Property Trust, a real estate investment trust, acquired a Heartland Dental property for $3 million. 5. Heartland Dental selected Sarah Jackson as chief human resources officer. 6. Heartland Dental added LWSS Family Dentistry to its network. The practice has seven locations in Virginia. Aspen Dental (Chicago): More than 1,000 practices 1. The Aspen Group opened its 1,000th Aspen Dental location. 2. Aspen Dental hired Payam Ataii, DMD, to be its senior vice president of orthodontic. 3. An Aspen Dental practice and MD Now Urgent Care clinic in Cape Coral, Fla., purchased a shared property for $5.1 million. 4. The Aspen Group opened the TAG Oral Care Center for Excellence in Chicago, which announced its plans to provide dental care to underserved Illinois residents. 5. Aspen Dental and ClearChoice Dental Implant Centers opened their first co-location in Albuquerque, N.M. 6.
