In May, Medscape released a ranking of the best and worst places for physicians to practice. e list, which evaluated the states and Washington, D.C., is based on 12 metrics, including malpractice payouts, compensation and cost of living. Also in May, personal finance website WalletHub ranked the best and worst states for nurses to practice; its list also included Washington, D.C. e website used 21 metrics to examine each state's level of opportunity and competition as well as their work environment. Here are the five worst places for physicians to practice, according to Medscape: 1. Maine 2. Maryland 3. West Virginia 4. Rhode Island 5. Washington, D.C. Here are the five worst states for nurses to practice, according to WalletHub: 1. Oklahoma 2. Alabama 3. Hawaii 4. Arkansas 5. Mississippi n 8 highest paid PA specialities in 2022: Report By Claire Wallace P hysician assistants have different pay rates based on the states and specialities in which they work, with the highest paid PA specialty being cardiothoracic and vascular surgery, according to a report from Kiiky Wealth. In 2022, PAs made the most money working in Connecticut, Hawaii, Washington, Alaska and California, according to the report. Eight highest paid physician's assistant specialties: 1. Cardiothoracic and vascular surgery: $125,000 a year 2. Pathology: $119,000 a year 3. Pain Medicine: $115,000 a year 4. Dermatology: $115,000 a year 5. Emergency medicine: $115,000 a year 6. Neurosurgery: $115,000 a year 7. Psychiatry: $115,000 a year 8. Surgical subspecialties: $115,000 a year n Advanced practice registered nurse compensation: 7 facts By Claire Wallace C ertified registered nurse anesthetists had the highest pay of any advanced practice nurse in 2022 according to Medscape's 2022 APRN compensation report. Seven facts about advanced practice registered nurse compensation: 1. Base compensation for CRNAs is the highest among advanced practice nurses at $197,000 a year, while compensation for clinical nurse specialists is lowest at $107,000. 2. Sixty-six percent of CRNAs saw an increase in pay between 2020 and 2021, followed by 60 percent of nurse practitioners, 59 percent of clinical nurse specialists and 52 percent of nurse midwives. 3. Less than half of nurse practitioners (48 percent) feel fairly compensated. 4. Advanced practice nurses earn the most in hospital inpatient care settings. 5. Nurses with adult-gerontology acute care certifications earn the highest salary. 6. Advanced practice nurses working on the Pacific coast earn the highest salary of any region, at $148,000. 7. Nurse practitioners also make the most on the Pacific coast, at $140,000. n
